Where to get "cheap" .40 ammo these days?

Hello. I need to get some .40 cal ammo and it's been a few years since I needed to buy some. My supply is almost up... Is there any place in particular these days that is best for selling plinking ammo?

Been paying near $80 for 250 rounds UMC at Wally World. Not my idea of cheap, though. Ordered a conversion barrel because same in 9mm is $55. Shopped around but with travel, or shipping, and bulk purchase I can't do a whole lot better.

I always bought mine from Wally World until a few months ago. I sold off all of my .40 cal guns for the simple fact it is just as much as .45 ammo. If I'm gonna spend that much on hand gun ammo, it's gonna be .45 or 10mm.

I load my own for about $2.80/50 but then I've been handloading for most of my life so it's not an issue for me. Just buy dies, bullet mold and bullet sizing die from Lee and I'm good to go.

Whenever I buy 500 rounds or more of plinking ammo I seem to go to "Cheaper than Dirt". However I just order one type of ammo at a time, otherwise they nail you for shipping and handling if it comes from more then one warehouse!!

I like Tulamo, some don't but it works fine for me out of my two Glocks. And the price is about the best I have found!

As above "Ammunition to Go" is also good.

Walmart for me for my 9mm and .40. I have a G23 and a 40-9 conversion bbl. And when I , maybe not anyone else, but for me, when I calculate Walmart prices of ammos vs. Internet, and also shopping at my local across the river in PA Walmart won't charge shipping, and less sales tax than here too, it's always cheaper than most net prices because of the shipping charge.

CTD is famous for that. You add all these cheap ammos into your cart, then you see you need to add $50 bucks for shipping. The price per round goes through the roof.

between dirt cheap and cool Walmart value packs I'm happy buying 40 and 9 their, esp they have a 100rd JHP .40 Remington pack I've never seen anywhere else and it's only like 30 bucks.

Cheap .40? no such thing anymore. It was cheap 10 years ago, but now even 9mm costs now what .45 auto did back then ($250 a case). I started reloading about 10 years ago simply because I used so much ammo in a year, and it was getting expensive. Now, you need a second job to shoot any significant quantity. At $14+ for 50 rounds of factory ammo, it costs nearly $100 just to shoot for 1 hour without worrying about pacing yourself.

Seriously, you should consider doing the math and reloading. You will pay off the machine very fast. I saved more money reloading a single case of .300 Win Mag than my Dillon 550B cost new. Not trying to be pushy, reloading is the 1st thing that pops in my head when people start looking for cheap ammo.

I agree.....If you shoot alot a reloader (Dillon 550) is the way to go.

You can probably do some quantity shopping online and beat prices at WalMart if thats what you want to do for now.

When I bought my first 40S&W in the early 90's there was no difference in price between it and 9mm ammo. Now all my 40S&W pistols are gone but one, and it has a conversion barrel.
Reloading is the way to go. My problem is every time I save the money to get started I buy another gun!

Buy a .22 caliber pistol - Ruger makes several that are good.

Go to range - shoot some 40 - then shoot .22 until your trigger finger gets tired.

last time I checked walmart has Federal Champion .40S&W 100/box for $25. my reloads are less than $10 per 100 rounds

In Canada, .40 is about a buck cheaper per box than .45. I bought some from a professional reloader (he's been doing it for decades and selling all his stuff, automated setup in his house) for 14 a box all in, and 18 a box for .45 all in. Stuff in Canada's woefully expensive

Even a good single stage press would allow you to load up cheap ammo for practice. If you want an inexpensive progressive then the Dillion Square Deal B is a good way to go to get your feet wet and you can load up a lot of ammo with one.

Went to Wal-Mart today and the price of the 100 round Federal Champion boxes went from $26 to $28.

I just try to look around at all my LGS's and see what ammo specials they are running. I can usually find the for $11-12/50. Not the best but not too bad.

SGAmmo.com has two limited deals right now that are outstanding. Win Ranger 180gr @ $149/500rd and Fed HST 180gr @169/500rd. Hollow points for FMJ money!

They also almost always have Rem green box for $125/500rd for plinking. That's cheaper than Walmart,too.

Their shipping is reasonable.

How does that Remington compare to the Federal from Walmart? And what benefit does nickel plates brass have over the usual? Only $14 to ship, that's a hell of a lot better than any other place I've seen.

I'm not sure of the difference between the UMC and the UMC Target - other than the nickeled brass. Nickel is nice because it doesn't tarnish, and I've heard that it is supposed to be a little bit "slicker" as well for feeding, though I'm not sure on that.
