Virginia CHP in Arlington

Just thought I'd record and share getting my Virginia CHP here in the great city of Arlington.

I've filled-out the Virginia Application For Concealed Handgun Permit forms.

I called the Arlington Sherrifs Department, and was forwarded to the Arlington County Circuit Court, which is where the paper-work needs to be submitted.

I spoke at length to a Miss Jones, who explained that I needed to get my application notorized, and do my finger-print card, both of which can be done in the same county building (at the Sherrif's office) as the circuit court. I have a feeling that I need to get passport pictures to turn in with my application, but that wasn't mentioned.

One note is that there is absolutely no information on applying for a permit on the Arlington county government web-site. I have a feeling that they don't want to make the process easy.

I've had my Michigan CPL since they were available, but evidently that's not good enough for showing proficiency with a handgun, so now I'm calling the NRA looking for an on-line course that I can complete to go with my application.

O.k......this is not gonna be easy.

The NRA has no on-line courses. The V.S.P. website references the following;
"Completing any firearms training or safety course or class, including an electronic, video, or on-line course, conducted by a state-certified or National Rifle Association-certified firearms instructor; "

A person at the NRA suggested looking for on-line courses, and I found this course. It's $40, far cheaper than taking NRA basic pistol courses locally.

Anyone ever use this to get their VA permit?

Currently taking the above linked on-line course after talking to the owner of the site and being re-assured that it will work for getting my VA CHP.

Pretty boring, meant for true noobs, but the best price for getting the paper-work necessary. I'm not even watching the video, just listening and posting here......if I fail the test, I'm an idiot.

Also, while talking to the owner of the site (his personal number is listed on the site), he told me that I don't need to get pictures taken, and that my drivers license is the picture part of my permit.

for another $10, look at the ccw course given at 340 defense, about 40 minutes west of leesburg, va. you will get some range time also. and you will like the range.

I shoot at 340Defense, it definitely is a great place to shoot. But there's no way in hell I'm driving 2 hours round trip, plus the extra $10, just to get a stupid certificate. Not sure that what they do is good in VA either, but the point is moot.

That's the course that I took. I woudn't recommend online training if you don't have much experience with firearms. I took the online course because I couldn't find my DD214 when I was applying for my permit. The Concealed Carry Institute is owned by my LGS, Bob's Gun Shop in Norfolk, VA. It worked for me. Unless the state law has changed in the last year since I got my permit, it should still meet the requirements for training.

not sure if the rules have changed, but i took a hunter safety course, in middle school if you can believe that, we had a shooting team, and that certificate was satisfactory, like a decade or so later, to get my va ccw.

Good for you! I made the mistake of skipping through to the end of the video, failed the test, and had to watch that boring video a second time.

Who told you your out-of-state CWP wasn't good enough? The requirements are so lax that practically anything is good enough in VA.

The one about a pistol in the vehicle in a school zone.

Two different people......one at the circuit court.

We would be happy to assist you with any training needs that you have. We offer both classroom and live fire based classes.

Please don't settle for any online "training" class.

Thanks for the info. I've been shooting for 20 plus years, pretty decently, and had my MI CPL for the last 7 years. I just needed a piece of paper for my application that stated I took a pistol course.

Anywhoo....I turned in my paper work, and got finger printed on Monday, March the 5th. They will be sending me an e-mail notification when I can come pick it up. That kind of sucks, in Michigan it got sent in the mail.......oh well.

Also, when I got out to the Court House parking lot, a WW2 vet had lost control of his vehicle and smashed the car next to mine, and pushed another vehicle clear 1/2 across the lot......thankfully my vehicle was not hit in a parking lot again.
