Here's a great home defense shotgun for a newbie to consider
Remington 870 Youth 20 Gauge
Cheap - $329.00 after taxes if that much
Portable - 21" youth barrel with 13" LOP
Anyone can use it - Designated as a "Youth" 870 Express.
I started buying these when my sons starting duck hunting. The it dawned on me they make great HD weapons. This is from our annual pilgrimage to Arkansas. My youngest made the trip with me. They are so easy to carry and handle as per the picture:

Yep, agree...my son's Mossberg 500 Bantam youth 20 gauge plays dual role as his hunting shotgun and a HD shotgun for him and my wife. Has the same overall length as my Remington 870 with an 18.5" barrel.

I agree, I handled one recently at Sports Authority and I really liked the idea. I liked it so much I actually started looking up ballistic type info on the 20ga as I'm not familiar with it at all.
If my fiance doesn't like the 870HD I recently gave her after shooting it, then I'll get her this exact gun. Does anyone make a mag extension or different barrels?

No argument here.
Great for anyone averse to the kaboom or weight/size of a 12g

The design of the 870 with the steel receiver abates the recoil in the 13" LOP Youth model as well as even the 12 gauge 3.5" magnum model. I don't understand it but 870's often have less felt recoil than recoil operated semi autos. I like them because they are easy to work on.
About the only thing I add to the Youth 20 is an imp cylinder choke. I am not sure about mag extensions or different barrels. It is easy to change the stocks out. I do know that.

Nothing exclusive about it. Model 81180 has the 18.5" Vent Rib barrel and Synthetic youth stocks. And would make a better HD then the 21" barrel.
Wilson did make 20ga Extension for the 870 but they have discontinued them due to lack of a supplier for the steel tube to make them. They could return in the future.
Remington of course makes a 2 shot.

The Remington Express Compact Jr is the sleeper in the group. Think of it as the librarian you walk past because you can't see her beauty until she let's her hair down and takes off her glasses.

By exclusive I meant in this configuration from the factory..the laminated wood...and the 18" barrel.
At least GM has it listed as exclusive to them...

I still vote for the Rem Exp Comp Jr.

Is that a 1 or 2 shot extension?
Is this the Express Compact or the Jr with the 12" LOP.
I assume this had the dimples you needed to drill out?

It's a Wilson/SGT +2.

To be honest, I can't remember if this gun came with the dimples or not. I've drilled out more than a few of them..which isn't any big deal.
