9mm 147g
I have used GD 124+p in my G26/G19 for the longest time and recently tried some heavier bullets, I really liked how they felt and how I was able to get follow up shots on target, I have heard great things about 147g HST in standard pressure but I can't track them down anywhere, anyone know where I can get some boxes to try? are the Gold Dots in the 147 flavor similar in performance to the HST? thanks

Pickings are slim on the 147gr HST. I looked on all my usual sites (like over 20) with none in stock. Gold Dots would be my next choice.

I run 147gr Gold Dots. I like that they are bonded. I'd run HST or Ranger for the right price, too. I once ran some HST I got cheap. They were fine. I much prefer the recoil of 147gr HP, but would not lose sleep over 124gr +p either.

I have been on a waiting list for months for the 147g HST's, but honestly I might just get some 147g Gold Dots instead. I have seen the two various bullets from testing and they are both fairly similar. The HST looked to have slightly more expansion, but I believe the Gold Dot had better penetration results and it is bonded so you will not get jacket separation.

By the way, in the meantime I am currently carrying 124g +P Gold Dots and I don't feel under gunned. I also have some 124g HST standard pressure that I carry sometimes.

I like HST but their hit-and-miss availability is annoying. Gold Dots are generally much easier to locate most of the time, esp. in 9mm.

agreed, b/c of this i generally just stick w/ the ranger 9mm offerings. i recently ordered 250 rds of 147 gr bonded rangers(ra9b) from sgammo.com. good to know the rangers are pretty much always available from that site.
if i could find hsts consistently, i'd love to give their 147gr or 147 gr+p a try out of my g26 or pps...

Interested in trying 147gr JHP's to see how they feel. Don't know anything about the quality but Walmart sometimes has Winchester 147 gr JHP. I picked up a couple boxes a while back but have not tried them yet. White box like the 115 gr bulk but marked personal defense 147gr JHP.
Interesting test link: http://www.btfh.net/shoot/bullet-test-2.html

I always like the Winchester 147 gr.HP standard velocity ammo ,seems to be very accurate out of my Ruger P95..and cycle perfectly ..light recoil for follow up shots

I carry the 147g Gold Dot. The HST would be just as good if you can find them. I personally prefer the heavier weight to the faster rounds.
Ammunition to go has 50rd boxes of the Ranger T 147g, which is also a great carry round.

For 'me,' I don't like HST anything, but i do like the 147's in the 9mm (which i rarely carry) such as WW PDX 1 and XTP's and the bonded GD's all in 147gr. I want and need the penetration they offer over the lighter weights.
Dang i even like the WWB 147's in JHP's.
Good luck on whatever you decide amigo...

There's a reason they're "light recoil" and allow for "quick follow up shots"...

trying to get HST 147gr is hard, but not impossible. they can be expensive but if you keep your eyes peeled they will eventually show up and for a decent price

The 147gr do not have a good street record. I would not stand in front of one but the best bullet weight for 9mm have been 115, 124, 125, 127gr in actual shootings and you will hear about 115 and 124 more than the others and I perfer +P+ loadings

The Win USA 147JHP is a poor performer in real shootings. This bullet hasn't been updated since it was first designed in the mid-80's. If you want to use 147gr loads use a modern designed JHP like Golden Saber, SXT/T-Series or HST.

Please show me what data you are relying on to come to this conclusion.

I like it too amigo. It has good accuracy and tremendous penetration. There are better to be sure. The WW PDX1 147gr, and the GD bonded 147gr, but there is nothing at all wrong with the WWB 147's. Don't let folks with out knowledge talk ya out of them.

Try a search for data/reports from the 1990s and earlier. You'll find the "data" there, and it's still true only if you choose to ignore modern loads, elect to live in the past, or - more likely the case - if you are seeking validation for your +p and +p+ (i.e. light/fast) bias. Regardless, it's crazy how some stuff just seems to persist, especially on the internet even in the age of Google. Modern 147gr and 124gr +p are good stuff. IMO, heavier the better in all service calibers. Here's the result of some of my time well wasted: LE-ATK Gello Test Data: Compiled + Observations.

That was based on shootings from 25 years ago with a bullet designed for accurate potentially long-distance shots from a supressed MP5, not based on shootings using any of the bullets from 15 years ago to now. The people who have shot people with 147 grain HSTs and the other members of this generation have all been extremely happy.
As in, the bullets did exactly what they were designed, advertised, intended, and expected to do. JHP design has really only had real growth since the early 90's, so to base your ammunition choices on bullets that were designed before manufacturers knew how to make a consistently performing JHP is foolish or uninformed. Since the internet is about ubiquitous, they're pretty much the same thing these days.
The Winchester white box 147 hasn't been updated since it came out in the 80's, and it's never been a great expander, but with bullets there's no magic happening. It's a heavyweight bullet that doesn't expand as much as any of the newer offerings, which means it will give a lot of penetration. Think of it as a budget XTP, another mediocre expander that is known for great accuracy and penetration.

That's what I thought. I hadn't seen anything written recently that suggested the 147 grain loads were not impressive in actual performance.
