Honestly, I don't have "defense" ammunition in that caliber, just the stuff in a brown box. IMHO...

Sweet. I was looking at the hornady rounds but didn't find anything in 5.56. I know 223 and 5.56 is basically the same thing but my mind is more at ease if it's 5.56. I got some American eagle M855. The way I see it is that there really isn't "defense ammo" for a rifle like there is for a pistol. I was just curious if there was anything specific

Since I don't plan on engaging anyone hundreds of yards away, Lake City or IMI M193 is probably as good as anything at home defense ranges. And it's cheap enough to practice with what you fight with.

Hornady TAP 75gr. .223 version but it's still great stuff. M193 for large stash quantities.

I have the Ranger Bonded FBI load and the Federal Tactical Bonded as my primary. I also have the Ranger Partition and SP as secondary.

I keep an assorted stash:
Federal Tactical Bonded .223 55gr.
Federal Tactical Bonded .223 62gr.
Federal Tactical Tru Barnes TSX 55gr.
Federal 62gr. Bonded SP in .223 (contract overrun stuff from about a year ago that was available.)
XM556FBITT3 62gr Bonded in 5.56 (some just recently hit the civilian market)
Speer Gold Dot 64gr .223.
I prefer 55gr stuff out of my rifle although most of what I have is 62.
I just try to buy what I come across and most is 62gr.
I also prefer barrier blind loads and loads
that don't rely on fragmentation.
True 5.56mm loads that do that are hard to find, most are .223.
