trigger guard question

Newbie question here.

What is the reason the trigger gaurd can be folded back towards the hand grip?

Cold weather use- IE gloves! I used to have a pair of Mil issued artic mittens- they had a trigger finger for right or left use built in so you could keep the miiten on in sub-zero temps. Worked real good. And believe me in AK or Korea you use them.
