That's a starting charge in Hodgdon's manual. 946fps.

Really. My manuals all show 5.2 as starting loads. If you are right, that would put my PF at 156. Much higher than I was looking for.

Have any suggestions for about 800 fps with 231? I think the volume will be too low for any consistency at all.

I would but I get in trouble when I do something like that.

Ok, if I have to guess, around 920fps in a 4". What does the winner get?????

5.3gr is Max in the Hodgdon 2011 manual for 1,001fps.

If you're looking for 800fps with that powder take the ratio of actual powder to max powder and multiply it by the max FPS to get an idea.

Let's say 4.2/5.3= .792 x 1001 = 793fps. So 4.2gr should get you close to 800fps.

Powder and velocity aren't linear, but it's a ballpark estimate to use on the fly. Try 4.2gr and see where you go, adjust accordingly.

Interesting. My Lyman #49 lists 5.8gr as max at 1050 fps and starting load as 5.2 gr for 937 fps. That is quite a difference.

Thanks for the formula. I will copy that in one of my manuals for future use. I will load up a few at 4.2 and give them a try tomorrow as well. Thanks!

I was shooting a G23. The 4.8 load came in right at 950 fps. The 4.2 load came in at about 740. The 4.2 load was very soft but turned the gun into a single shot. Not enough *** to cycle the slide.

Loaded some Berry's plated 180's tonight with the 4.8 load and they are very soft shooting and the gun will run. Unfortunately, I broke the Hell out of my LnL tonight. But that is a subject for another thread.

I just got a sample pack of Precision Delta 165 grain FMJ's. I used the exact combination you did for the 4.8 grains of 231 load, along with a few other combinations. I'm interested to see how they do out of my G27, hopefully this weekend if it doesn't rain.

I guessed "Broken LnL" a long time ago. Do I win anything?

Shadyscott, Sorry your LnL broke.

I really broke it. As in broken and bent metal. I was about 300 rounds in just clicking along when something jammed on the upstroke. Evidently I am nearly as strong as Jack. Without forcing anything , I sheared the roller off the primer shuttle, bent the crap out of the actuator rod and in general, mucked things up. Unfortunately, I will now have to buy ammo to shoot this weekend. I don't think Hornady is going to overnight me the parts to get it fixed in time. I am shooting the IDPA match here in Columbia Saturday and we are leaving for the match in GA at 6 am Sunday. I REALLY HATE buying ammo!

I've warned you people about letting Zombie Steve into your loading room... it never ends well.

The roller is held on by the pin that goes into the side of the primer shuttle and if you force it that's usually what pops out then puts a strain on the rod and bends. Doesn't happen very often, (the only time I've ever had it happen was at the hands of the infamous Zombie.)

When Hornady ships the parts to you you'll have to take the press off the bench, one end of the rod attaches to the underside of the press.

After you get it up and running again wait a couple of weeks then call Hornady and tell 'em you broke it again. Always good to have a few spare parts around... they're very good about sending out parts. They've always been a pleasure to deal with.

Next time you see Zombie approaching your house just shoot him a little... that usually chases him off.

Thanks Jack. Yesterday, I bought a jug of Unique in your honor.

Called Hornady today. Parts are on the way, no questions asked. Hold time: 3 seconds

Excellent customer service

Note to self: Shoot Steve a little if he come around. Got it.

Jack doesn't know which one's which, so what does it matter? I broke his LNL, you broke your LNL... it gets confusing.
