Great point! Maybe we should all start working out and eating better. When I first got into guns I began buying prepping gear. I guess I'm over it now.

I have dropped nearly 30lbs since my last post in this thread. Running/biking, more Kung Fu. Eating a LOT better!

I haven't been here in a year and I see a thread I posted on way before then near the top of the page...

Hopping place.

Glad you are preparing for what you think is an issue, most people just sit back and worry or assume someone else will take care of them.

Interestingly, after 9-11 I checked the boards and everyone wondered what happened with all the bug out plans. Seems that everyone was so prepared to bug out but when the time came, no one bugged out. They all stood in place at home.

Fortunately I don't have a need to change my plans at all. I already carry the items for 9/11 on any day of the year. I don't see a high probability of an incident this year. We already have a POTUS that's working to support AQ in Syria. They've got their man in the White House. Why risk spoiling all that come from that?

Who would have bugged out/why?

Safest thing to do is go to the million Muslim march. Walk around and chant slogans. Hide in plain sight. They'll never think of looking for you there.

Because back then the whole preparedness movement was still in it's infancy so to speak. Everyone's idea was to bug out in case something happened. Terrorism was still a far thought in those days and only a few cared who Al Qaeda was. Most preppers in that time were more prepped for our own government and the UN since they still had the after taste of Bill Clinton.

Like I said, back in those days the idea for those into preparedness was to bug out. So when 9-11 happened everyone wondered why no one bugged out. No one bugged out because there was no need to. Lessons learned over time.

I'll agree that people are much more aware of preparedness since 9/11/01. However I would disagree on the other points.

Prior to 9/11, I was working on preps. Back then and now, I find 'bugging out' to be a high risk option that should only be used if the risks of staying outweigh the risks of leaving your home.

The reasons for preps were not the UN or Slick Willy. The reasons varied. When I was a kid, I grew up in S FL. My parents had preps that were geared toward hurricanes. When I moved off on my own, I thought it best to prepare for a variety of concerns. Terrorist threats were included in the list. We had many terrorist attacks that came before 9/11.

And on 9/11, I recall people panicking in my area & wanting to take their kids out of school. Seriously...planes are crashing into the towers in NYC and people are concerned that Nowheresville Elementary School is on the list of likely targets? Uh no. And we had zero intention of 'bugging out'. The thought never crossed our minds.

What? No toilet paper listed??? How about hand cleaner?

Your rifle is too big and heavy. You are carrying way too much ammo. Marines patrolling on Guadalcanal carried 25 rounds. Their job was to sneak and peek, not get into gunfights.

50 rounds of pistol ammo should suffice.

You only need one change of clothing. Maybe 2 pairs of extra socks.

Get rid of the mess kit. Get a military canteen cup and a spoon. Eat canned goods (Spam, for example) if possible. Lessens the chance of dysentery.

Bugging out and humping in the boonies is not for the faint hearted.

Just incase nobody has noticed but the terrorist have already won.
They gave us the patriot act more power to all other branches of government and many restrictions on our freedoms.
We have spend Hundreds of Billions around the world and wasted precious resources including patriotic people abroad and at home chasing after 3rd world ghosts and have more people hate us then ever.
Muslims have infiltrated us at the highest offices and are taking us apart from the inside out.
And not only that the same people that flew planes into our buildings and bomb us in Iraq and Afghanistan are now receiving cash, guns and ammo in Syria from us.

So yes their objective has won out.
