Which Round for 4" 45ACP

I had Milt Sparks make a holster for my 4" Kimber compact, and the holster just came today. I have never carried a 45 ACP, although I shoot over 1K rounds of it each year. I really do not know what would be the best round for 4". I was thinking of Rem. 185gr +p Golden Sabers, but I just shot one through denim and water jugs and I am not impressed. The jacket expanded and came off. The core did not expand at all. Also, the muzzle flash was greater than I would want.

I shoot enough 45 ACP and 10mm, that +p rounds do not hinder my performance.

I carry 230 gr Speer Gold Dot for short barrels in my Glock 30SF. Seems to work really well for me.

What does Speer GD "Short Barrel" mean? Do the bullets expand at a lower velocity? Is the round designed with powder that would give the highest velocity out of a short barrel?

The GD for short barrels is designed to expand at lower velocities.

The big Three: Ranger, Gold Dot, HST.

Can't go wrong with any of them

Would you recommend +p for a 4" barrel or standard pressure.

230gr standard pressure. Gold Dots or HSTs. Just make sure they're 100% reliable. I had minor feeding trouble with the last round with Gold Dots in my M&P 45c so I've switched to HSTs.

Golden Sabers do seem to have a big problem with jacket separation. The bonded stuff should be better.

Definitely put at least 100 of them through the gun without any malfunctions first. Since it is a compact kimber I would rather have 200 through it

Nope, all you are doing is adding noticeable recoil IMO. I carry a 4" S&WPD, my usual load is the 200grXTP, std vel, runs right @ 900fps. Always expands some, penetrates as deep as some 230grJHP that expand to a larger frontal area, but still, 65cal, good expansion, deep penetration, mild recoil in my alloy frame gun, I am fine with that. I do like the 185grRS, but in std vel. The +P seems to over expand & much more blast & recoil. The std vel 185grRGS makes 990fps, plenty. The 185gr XTP is another choice for lighter bullet load, even the 185grWSTHP works better IMO in the shorter bbls than in a 5" gun.
