Said a prayer for him and his family as we drove through Memphis yesterday on our way to see my mom.

Losing any brother or sister in blue hurts. It's tenfold when it's one of your immediate family. Anvil was one of ours...
Rest in Peace, Brother.

Went to the DoubleTree Hotel this evening and climbed the North Stairway to between the 9th and 10th floors where it happened. Said many long prayers for Tim and for his wife and children and brother MPD officers. Tim acted bravely going up into that fatal funnel without having detailed intel on what was going on. It was such a narrow landing, and his killer probably saw him coming by looking downward thru the window in the 10th floor stairwell door. It's a sad place to sit for a while and take it all in.
RIP, Tim. You performed with bravery and honor.

OK, Russ. After a year has passed since this happened I believe that I will. Tim and I were friends. We talked endless hours about reloading and casting bullets and work. So here goes......
When he charged up that stairwell he wasn't even on duty yet. He was driving his red pickup on his way to work when he either 1) heard by radio or 2) saw the responding MPD officers converging on the Double Tree Hotel. A man with a gun was reported to have killed someone on an upper floor and was still shooting randomly.
So Tim reacted in a way which we understand when forced into a decision of such magnitude. He turned the wheel of his POV and drove toward the gunfire, ill prepared as he was for what was up above. When he burst thru the lobby doors of the Double Tree there was scant intelligence of what was going on. There was a person or persons unknown on an upper floor who had moments earlier shot and killed at least one person and others were also wounded. That was it.
And he took the North Stairwell on foot.
Somewhere between the 9th and 10th Floor, near the halfway landing, Tim was seen by the gunman who was looking downward thru a tiny pane of window glass on the 10th Floor Stairwell Exit into the staircase that Tim was climbing.
And the gunman burst thru the door and fired downward toward Tim who literally had nowhere to go and nowhere to take cover on that narrow stairway. Tim was hit in the head and was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
I've been to the Double Tree since, and climbed that North Stairwell to the spot where Tim's life was taken. It's stark and bleak and brightly lit whitewashed concrete which is completely without any mention by way of a scribble or graffiti or wreath or flowers or even a permanent plaque that a MPD Patrolman gave his life there. It is quiet as can be. Only the hum of the sodium lights prevent that place from being totally silent.
If you are ever in Memphis and find yourself standing in front of the Double Tree Hotel and feel compelled to go in... The North Stairwell is the one immediately on your right ater you enter thru the glass doors into the lobby. Don't take the elevator to the 9th floor and walk up half a flight. Walk the entire 9-1/2 flights and say prayers for Tim Warren while you're grasping for breath at every landing .
No tourists or guests ever bother to climb the stairs at that height so if you wish to be alone with your thoughts while on that landing between the 9th and 10th Floors you can take all the time that you want to pay respects and no one will ever encounter you.
Adios, Tim. You were brave and gave all. Nothing wrong with that, my friend.

Your post of how Officer Warren was trapped in the stairhall brought back memories. Stairhalls are basically bullet funnels. God help you if you were halfway up one and someone opened fire.
Thank you again for sharing.
