Thoughts/opinions on Maverick 88?
I couldn't find any threads on the Maverick 88 using the search function so I figured I'd ask you guys what you think of it as an HD shotgun?
This is the model I'm looking at: http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/p...ducts_id/42628

for the price it is a great gun. I had one for a while and probably put over 1000 rounds through it without any issue

Good Shotguns. They are basically Mossberg 500's but with a trigger guard crossbolt safety.

I have the 18.5" Security model and I haven't had any issues with it. I have designated it as my HD gun, but I put it through it's paces every time I go out clay shooting with my other shotgun just to make sure it sees some use. I switch back and forth between the pistol grip and the regular synthetic stock which I shortened by about 2.5".

It's a Mossberg 500 Persuader with a Remington 870 safety. The perfect HD shotgun.
Is it built for dragging behind a truck through Afghanistan? No. Would it survive it? Probably a lot longer than you would expect.
Fantastic price/performer. Total respect.

My shooting buddy has that same model and loves it. It's even pretty accurate with rifled slugs out to about 50 yards. It's a great value.

Mine is the designated "HD" shotgun. Added a softer recoil pad for a 500, side saddle, and a Surefire light. Good to go.

I'm pretty happy with mine. I have the 8 shot security model with rifle sights. I love it. I prefer the crossbolt safety to the tang safety of the mossberg.

You know what you call a BG after he is shot with a load of buck shot fired from a Mossberg Maverick 88 - 12 gauge?

I bought one of the 88's from a guy at work last year for $100, picked up a cheap barrel off of gunbroker for $15 & chopped it down to 18.5".
I just sold the original barrel for $90 so now I've got a $25 shotgun. Not too bad of an investment.

local shop has an 8shot pistol grip 88 and are asking 125. might pick it up but i still want to wait for thr real mossberg 500 persuader model. im sure it would be fine and im usually not a brand person but i already have another mossberg turkey gun and im comfortable with them. i really like the tang safety on the 500.

A Mossberg Turkey gun (depending on the model) is an awesome all around SG - HD, Birds, Sport, whatever.

How did you do it? I am really considering shortening the stock by a few inches because I'm not comfortable with the stock length. What did you use for the end as a recoil pad?

I was considering shortening the stock on a synthetic gun.
I did some research - came up with this.
Determine length of stock you want (including recoil pad thickness)
This is where you want to cut the stock off - measure the length and width of the stock at this point.
Buy a grind to fit recoil pad that will fit these measurements - http://www.limbsaver.com/2011/firearms/38-39-40.php
Say your stock after you cut it will be 4" long X 1.25 wide - then you buy the small size pad.
Cut off the stock - fill void in the stock with foam peanuts - fit a chunk of cardboard about 2" inside the stock - held in place with tape / supported by the foam peanuts - fill end of stock with epoxy - let dry - sand smooth.
Attach grind to fit pad onto the end of stock / with screws directly into the epoxy.
Mark recoil pad & grind to fit the stock.
The down side - it will be a PITA if you ever want to remove the stock - so make sure it is tight before you epoxy the end - I was trying to figure out a way to form a hole in the epoxy so i would be able to get to the nut / bolt on inside the stock - but didn't get that far before I moved on to something else.

i have a 20" mossberg 535 turkey gun. its a 3.5" chamber and a 20" VR barrel with fiber optic rifle sights that mount to the rib and choke tubes. ive actually looked into swapping ou toan 8shot magazine tube and having the barrel nut moved forward and reattached with silver solder just to have an 8-shot capable, 3.5" gun with tubes availible. would be my idea of all around.
i took the rear sights off and had to glue the front in place but i currently use it with a modified tube for HD and skeet/trap. XX-full for spring turkeys.

I thought the 535 Turkey was like 22"?
Whatever - still Tukey capable and definitely not to big for indoor sports.
