Revolver Refinish
I have an older model Smith 14-1 Revolver that has had most of the bluing worn off of it. I am trying to figure out what would be best to help protect the metal from rust. I had not handled it much and it had developed some surface rust that I cleaned off but I want to protect the metal and be able to enjoy shooting it.
I am trying to decide between DuraCoat or a reblue from smith. I know neither is going to look the same but this is not a collector piece anyway.
Anyone have any actual experience with a duracoat revolver?

Spray on finishes and revolvers are not a good match IMHO. You would be much better off just rebluing it or, if you want something different, going to a nickel plating.

I was trying to be cheap, but I will keep her oiled until I can spend the extra money on a better finish.

S&W Re-Finish
You might give S&W customer service a call. S&W does re-blue jobs that are really good and a decent price... plus while you have the gun at the factory you can have a "tune up" done which barring the need for major parts will return the gun to as new condition for a fixed price (last one I had done, well worn Texas DPS trade in, only cost $55.00... a really great value to me as it included removing the barrel and re-cutting the forcing cone at that price.)
When the gun came back it looked and functioned like a factory new gun.
FWIW

I am waiting for Coal Creek Armory to do their Isonite QPQ (Melonite/Tenifer?) on my SW Model 640.
I already have a well used and beaten blue'd model 10 and figure this 640 (originally satin in finish) could use a make over.
More to come once I get billed and the gun returned.

Hmm I would like to hear how that turns out for you.
I am currently leaning toward sending it in to Smith and Wesson once they send my M&P 45 back. Though something that would last a bit longer than bluing would be nice so I may have it done in nickel.
I found out that the revolver had been re blued in the past by another owner, so it is not original anyway.

I called S&W a while back to do my 15-2, they quoted me $200 plus shipping. I think Fords was $275.

I agree with Robar Guns you would be better off having it reblued then to use a DIY product like Duracoat or Cerakote

I was supposed to have the revolver earlier this week but USPS failed to deliver. The gun is on its way back or at Coal Creek armory right now. I sent them a UPS Next Day Air label VIA FedEx with an ETA of May 9th. I should be getting the gun by Wednesday the 11th.
