Reseach. I did a lot of research and decided that this was the load that I would go with. The reality of the situation is this. We can follow the exploits of the jello junkies or the morgue monsters and with both supplying info, hope that we have chosen the best load in the caliber of our choice. But you are not really going to know which one is the best until the time comes when you are forced to use it. So we do our homework and pray that we have gone with the best load we can buy for our carry sidearm.
"Jello junkies."
"Morgue monsters."
Nicely phrased.

I agree with the points.
I carry a G36, loaded with Remington 230gr. HPs.
I carry a G19, loaded with either Winchester Silvertips or CorBon 124gr. +Ps.
I have confidence they would all do pretty well, probably, assuming I could hit what I aim at under a lot of stress.
These are handgun cartridges. They ain't death-rays. They're hit and miss, just as our aim would be in many cases.
I pray I never have to use any gun at any time and highly doubt I will have to. If I do, I'm pretty confident I'm reasonably well-prepared from a firearm/ammo standpoint and practice/training as well.

Some folks, especially older ones, just prefer the heavier, slower moving bullets over the lighter and faster ones, same reason why so many people still prefer the .45 ACP.
Ok, that helps a lot. I'll buy a good quality, name brand defense round and go from there. I will go with 124gr since I regularly shoot that weight.

Glock 17 RTF2
Federal Premium
115 Gr +P Barnes DPX (Discontinued in 2010?)

My local shop had 50 round boxes for $20 each so I picked up a box on a whim. After shooting it, I went back and bought a half-dozen more boxes.

The all-copper DPX design has gotten the affirmative nod from DocGKR and several others. The velocity of the Federal version of the DPX loading is ~100 FPS slower than the Cor-Bon (which is around $40 for a box of 20). However, the tests I've read indicated that the Cor-Bon expanded well but was a just a little under the 12" gel penetration minimum recommended by the FBI. My thought is that if the velocity is a little slower, the DPX probably won't open quite as wide and thus will penetrate a little deeper - which is a reasonable comprimise.

Most importantly: in my G17, it's by far the most accurate hollowpoint round I've tried, the recoil felt as soft as FMJ ammo despite the +P, and it fed 100% reliably. What more could I ask for?
