Three different companies over about a 6 year period; first two companies (Olympic Security and First Response) were unarmed, however, I was able to get trained and certified in ASP/Defensive Tactics/OC at First Response. I was an onsite officer in both companies, and both companies did not have armed onsites; only for patrol. The third company I worked for was Knighthawk Protection in North Vancouver, which was my favorite company with a great and broad policy regarding weapons and training. I licensed and trained myself at First Response for my Armed DPSST license, then turned in my 2 weeks and headed to Knighthawk. I stayed there for almost 6 months, before some mental health issues caught up with me, and I decided to call it quits. Gave my Springfield XD-45 to a former Navy Officer of 12 years (honorably discharged twice), gave my duty belt to a new officer, and left on good graces. I only wish I was able to stick around and get trained/certified in Taser. My SSgt and the owner still found ways to deny me unemployment though, but that's a whole load of wax I don't want to get in on right now...

Suffice to say, I've done my time with Security, and I enjoyed the lessons it taught me, but at the end of the day, someone somewhere is going to have to do better than $10.35/hr if they want me armed at Apartment complexes on Graveyard shift. If I HAD to go back, Knighthawk would be my #1 choice, short of a Federal position, which only hire former military and LEO's in this area.

Don't blame you. I did unarmed security for several years until I was hired on with my current PD. I enjoyed the people I worked with, but it's no career and the pay was always terrible. It was a good stepping stone though.

You know what's funny, is that it hasn't always been the case. When I first joined the VPD's Explorer Post in the late 90's, I had an officer (or two) tell me "if you ever want to be a cop, don't ever go into security. They're a bunch of wannabes." Over the years, of course, I did what I had to do to put food on the table, and at $10.35/hr, that BARELY paid my bills, and security has now gotten to the point where you're right: it's a stepping stone into LE. My hearing disability (deaf left ear, partially deaf right, hearing aids in both) is playing a big factor in that, however, so I'm researching through Oregon and Washington's DPSST's to see just how much of a disadvantage I would have going into corrections or, even possibly, as a Reserve Deputy. I would love to do either (the only difference being one pays, the other doesn't), but if DPSST says "seek other employment", then I'm going to go seek another path in life. This is all I've known how to do though for most of my life, so the thought of doing something else is a daunting task.

This was my load out for a crowd control situation. Normally I don't carry everything pictured but it is available. Actually most of this is in my car with me and I normally have a taser on my belt which we weren't allowed to take that night.

I'm going to guess you are asking about why we were not allowed to take our tazers. It was at the request of the agency we were assisting no agencies in their county utilized them at that time so they didn't want us to bring ours. Don't ask me it was a admin decision.

Belt has been completed.

Many thanks to Bryon at Deployment Solutions... "Deployment Solu" here on GT.

He hand crafted my AR mag holder..

The SHOT ShowCase

Left to right...

-20 round Colt AR-15 magazine in Deployment Solutions pouch
-G34/TLR-1/6280
-SL20LED ring (I use my sap pocket for the light but the ring is for left handed reholstering if needed)
-Peerless Model 700 Chained in a Safariland 090
-Peerless Model 801 Hinged in a Safariland 090H
-Not pictured... MT XTS5000 with a MT belt clip
-X26 in a Blade Tech (Soon to be replaced with a Blackhawk )
-Dymondwood Ebony 30" baton in Safariland ring
-Bianchi mag carrier with x2 17+2 Glock mags
-Surefire G2LED in Surefire speedholster

This is on a Bianchi Accumold plain leather belt. The whole thing is surprisingly light.
