It is a thumb rest, its designed to reduce muzzle jump. I got it because I have large hands, here is more info on it:

Here's my new G36 that I have been customizing... Highlighted letters, CNC Machined Cover Plate, Meprolights, slug plug...... Should have my Pearce Plus Zeros in a few days..
I really like how it looks now..
