Olin 5.56 62gr. ammo

I bought some of this ammo today and am wondering if anyone has experience with it and the quality of it.

It is 62 grain M855 penetrator with the green tip in a plain box. The casings are kind of dull, not shiny and clean looking, and have very small dents in them. As long as they are safe it seemed like a good deal at $7 a box. Sportsmans guide currently has this same ammo.

47 views and only one reply! I expected some off the wall technical question.
Zhix, You’ll be fine with that. I don’t shoot 855 because I don’t get stellar accuracy and it’s hard on steel targets. Next time, unless you specifically want a 62g bullet, look for a 55g FMJ load (M193). You’ll find it cheaper.

I have half a case of AE 223 55gr. FMJs I got at a recent gun show for $7/20 and another half case of the same that I just got at Cabela's for $6/20 plus I had a $100 off card from buying an eotech 512 ($350) and some other stuff there. I also have a case of AE XM193 556 55gr. and a few hundred Remington 55gr FMJs.

I got these 62gr just to try something different and see if they're any good. I have not seen any other green tip M855 for less $, considering I didn't have to pay tax or shipping.

This might sound stupid, but can you by 855 Green Tip ammo in California? It is described as "armor piercing" ammo by some that sell it.

I left California in 2002 but I think its a no go there.

ETA: This is what AIM has on their website re California sales.

CALIFORNIA CUSTOMERS: No sales of ammunition delivered to the counties of: Napa and San Francisco. No ammunition delivered to the Cities of: Los Angeles, Oakland, San Francisco. No high capacity magazine exceeding 10rds sales to anyone or dealer in CA. Check for other Local & State laws before ordering.

I live in an area where I can receive ammo in the mail, I have been doing this for years. But can this type of ammo be mailed to CA. where you can receive ammo by mail?

Yes, M855 (SS109) green tip penetrator 5.56 ammo cna be legally possessed in CA.

Yes, it can be legally shipped to CA until the end of Dec 2010. 2011 is when the "no mail order" of ammo law goes into effect.

If'n its the Winchesrer 62gr. M855 #Q3269 it's good stuff. I think it's the same stuff the military uses, boxed for civilian consumption. It is a little tarnished and some dings.

Seems the Q3269 has been hard to come by in the recent past.
