Heavy Frame Short Barrel .357 question
Hi I was curious about heavy frame short barrel snubbies. Ive shot a 340 and Id consider it annoying. How do the larger frame short barrel revolvers handle? Something like a 686 with a 2.5" barrel?

Even the snubby L frame in a steel gun will be easy with .357mag. I had a 2.5 K frame (model 66-3) years ago that had some snap with magnum loads, but the extra 6-8oz of a similar L frame will absorb quite a bit of recoil.

I have a Ruger SP101 and have only shot 125gr. 357 HP from it and it handles just fine.

I forgot about my 617 Taurus. 7 shot 357. Excellent DAO trigger. You can shoot 357s out of it all day long. This has to be my favorite Revolver for IWB Carry.

Go for it. I love my primary carry piece. An Sp101 in 357. Ladies have borrowed it to take my basic handgun class, and shoot very well. They are using Remington 38 specials that I provide them. It does in fact shoot a trifle low with the specials. Maye an inch and a half to two inches. The 158gr Blazer HPs I carry in it are dead on. I'm not exactly a Blazer fan,but the price is right. I also believe in carry ammo that doesn't bring any baggage with it. Generic, over the counter, non threatening name, and no loop hole for the prosecution. Should one ever need to (heaven forbid), have to use it on another human.

As strange as this sounds,my 3" S&W 29 44 mag carried quite nicely. Very comfortable in fact. A little on the hard to cover side, but the DeSantis pancake holster worked well. Now there is a handfull! My handloads with 240 XTPs over H110 were less than enjoyable to shoot. A prettier piece there never was though.

I just took my new 2 1/4" SP101 to the range- fired everything from 38 110 gr. to 357 158 +P . I could definitely tell the difference, but it wasn't as bad as I expected.

+1 on the Pachmayr's for the SP101.
The stock grips beat my hands up.
The gun is downright mellow to shoot with .38 Special.
Typical Ruger; I find it more accurate to shoot it double action.

REAL funny you should mention Blazers. The 158 .357 round shot POA in my SP 101, the recoil was easily manageable and the stats on the Blazer website indicated a beefier +P .38 spl round - something along the lines of Buffalo Bore's FBI round. I think the JHP in it is...what? Gold Dot?
So a quality bullet in a cheap, accurate, controllable package. Seems to be flying under the radar when compared to name brand SD .357 ammo , but I've always considered it a REAL viable load for my SP 101 - indeed even for my 4" bbl 686+.

considering how small the velocity increase is from +p 38 to 357 out of short barrels the question you might want to ask is if you need to be shooting 357's in a snubby at all. If you can chronograph some loads out of 357 snubbies- the diff in my experience out of a snubby is 200 feet per second or less often much less.
