Format & install OS vs. just click the .exe
I recently did a clean install of XP on a spare system I've got laying around.
I got a copy of Win7 and didn't want to bother creating a bootable disc, so out of curiosity, I just clicked the setup.exe file and Windows 7 installed just fine over XP.
What is the difference between doing a format & clean install versus just clicking on the .exe file to install an OS?
Assuming the HD is fine, is there any reason to do a clean install instead of just clicking on the setup file and letting it do its thing?
Thanks!

There will probably be leftover system files from the XP install and installation files. You should be fine, but I always prefer a clean install on a freshly formatted partition.

Doing a clean allows you to avoid inheriting any problems that the original OS may be experiencing and your hard drive will not be bloated with a lot of leftover/unnecessary files from the previous installation.

Drjones,
The framework of Windows XP and Windows 7 are drastically different. It is always recommended to perform a clean install rather than an upgrade. Performance increases have been reported with a clean install in comparison to an upgrade install. For additional support and feedback, Microsoft does have an official Windows 7 RC Support Forum located here http://social.technet.microsoft.com/...egory/w7itpro/ . It is supported by product specialists as well as engineers and support teams.

jessicaD sounds hott! on another note. I always recommend clean installs. They are much better and more preferred than upgrades. In fact..every 6 -12 months i wipe my drives and start fresh with a clean install on my own home systems. And about 2 months ago, i wiped my work computer and installed the image on it. Everything runs faster and better.
good luck

She must have balls that clank to walk into this forum and announce she works for MS. If she's been here more than 4min, she probably understands how much we all LOVE MS!

By the way, if Jessica will drag Bill Gates into an office and beat the living crap out of him until he allows the Zune to be used on Linux, she'll be my BFF.
