I have tried rabbit and I did not like it. It has a really distinct smell to it when you cook it. That smell gags me BAD. OMG.

If I'm mistaken - please let me know. I wanted to eat that damn rabbit....

Yep...rabbit fever. A discolored or spotted liver is a dead giveaway.

It seems silly that we gave up all of the natural variety we could have had, just to limit ourselves to only three standard food animals - excluding sea kittens of course.
I think there are many reasons farmers raise cows instead of deer/rabbits/whatever. Cows are easily maneuvered/herded. You don't need a 10 foot fence to keep cows in. There are many less predators for cows that the others. It wouldn't surprise me if you got more meat per acre per pound of feed that any other option.

Regarding jack-rabbits, I've killed thousands and thousands of jack-rabbit in Tom Green County TX and never once thought about eating one.

I spent my early years in Crane County Tx. and shooting jackrabbits was a favorite past time for a lot of kids. Sometimes we just walked and hunted, other times an adult would drive us around on oil lease roads late in the evening.

I ate so much rabbit growing up I don't care if I never eat rabbit again. CAVEAT: Unless I'm really hungry and it is all I have.

NOTE: If you eat a LOT of rabbit each week, be sure to get some fats into you from somewhere. Rabbit meat is so lean it can be unhealthy eating it long term without a source of fat in your diet.

A lot of Florida's rabbit population is way down due to 'yotes. I remember during hunting seasons past that it would sound like war zone after the end of deer season, which was when rabbit hunters took after their quarry. Not nowadays though... pity. If I had land with 'yotes, I would put a bounty on them. If not able to afford a bounty, if nothing else, I would at least buy the ammo for the 'yote shooters/hunters to come to my land and eradicate them 'bastiges.'

How often do you hear that nowadays? I've also heard similar things about venison, since deer tend to be extremely lean, too.

It is a cyclical thing. Rabbit population goes up, then the coyotes and foxes move in. A few years later the predators drop off a bit and the rabbits come back.

Well then, the "cycle" has not been cycling here for about 12 years.

Don't rightly know as it is just something I learned growing up. I ate rabbit everyday (it seemed) during my early to mid teens. I guess since no one raises them for food as much as they used to it is not an issue anymore.

DO NOT EAT HARES.......i forget why.....crappy taste maybe.....
I never saw any lice on rabbits and the season in NY opened October 1st and there were a few times that date came and passed without a frost.

We used to check the livers for spots and discoloration. I forget the name of the disease they could carry, but we had a few with odd looking livers at times.

As far as eating hares goes, we used to hunt snowshoes and they tasted different that cottontail, but they were really good.

I've never eaten a jackrabbit.

A ten-foot fence to keep rabbits in?!

I made a bet with my GF about Publix selling rabbit a little over a year ago. If they did sell it then she had to buy it for me....if not I had to take her to the movies.

She lost and ended up paying something like $13.00 for half a rabbit .

After finding out that how much it cost for half a rabbit I started thinking about going into rabbit farming.

I don't eat more rabbit because:

VERY difficult to find in the stores around where I live; even in the much smaller "country stores" in the smaller towns outside of Indy.

I don't hunt for it myself.

A big reason why I don't hunt is because I just don't like "cleaning" whatever is being hunted.

Main reason: I've eaten it before, wasn't a big fan.

I'd swear it was like $8-9 for a whole one, here at least. Still not very cheap for the amount of meat you get, but cheaper than that.

I am 100% sure it was over $10 for the half....trust me she wasn't too happy about having to buy me rabbit.

Jack rabbits aren't good eating. They might make good chile or stew, but never tried it. Me and the dog would hunt cotton tail and then have mom cook it. She fried it the same as chicken. The hunt and chase was the fun part.
