just spitballing here... paracord sling attachment
has anyone ever thought of making or made a sling attachement using 550 cord? I was thinking about it and it seems as though it should work. With a proper knot and super glue (paracord becomes very hard when saturated with super glue, and does not come apart unless cut), around the forward end of the buffer tube.
It would impede the use of the forward most position of the stock but I never use that anyway? Again, just an idea bored on a Sunday night.

On my last Draco , I used the para cord in the handle, knotted and burned to attach a single point sling. It worked just fine and quiet. I would not do this with my rifle but the new draco will have the same deal.

It's not 1970 anymore.

During experimentation with paracord slings and sling attachments in my younger days, I can remember two things that came to light:
- Any attachment around the stock near the charging handle runs the risk of binding/jamming the charging handle if it is operated quickly and the cord gets in the way, and
- If the cord comes into contact with a really hot barrel, gas tube, or even the base of the front sight frame, it can melt and separate, dumping your weapon on the ground at an inopportune moment, with little or no notice.

Pretty much what he said.
I've had to knot a 550 front sling attachment onto an M249 in a hurry when the issue sling attachment (snap hook, HK type) broke. It was not by choice, there was no other option available in a hurry.
Thankfully no firing occurred as 550/hot barrel would have not been good.

I have a Remington in .222 that a Native man used for hunting seals in Prince William Sound years ago. It is rusty of course. Has a scope. And a home made sling made with hanging twine used on fishing nets. I have shot it, and I am not changing a thing on it. Oh, and I have an 1886 in .45-70 that a friend and his Dad used to shoot Beluga Whales in the Kenai and Susitna river mouths.

And how is that relevant to semiauto AR-15s and 550 cord?
People have been making gun slings out of cord, leather, rope, and everything else for years.
Does not always mean it's optimal.

It's similar to paracord. The knots he used and the way he attached it are really cool. That's why I won't change it.

Sorry but I got a chuckle out of this thread and the 70's comment. Not busting the OP's balls, but guys were doing things like that (and still do) for a long long time. That must mean that I am just getting old.

I have for my S&W M&P 15-22 trainer...

The knot is a single "constrictor" with the tightening over/under laps on the bottom of the tube. If your a boyscout and know your knots it's very strong and perfect for lashing. By itself it is very tight and does not slip at all on the tube, but I placed just a very small dot of hot glue under it prior to tightening it down to make absolutely sure. I then single knotted both ends together to form the loop, leaving the lengths long for a little character. It works great with my MS2 sling, it's light and cheap. You do lose the first position of your stock adjustment with this method.

Yeah, I came up with the idea when I was talking to some guys about a sling mount on the S&W M&P 12-22 sub-forum. Spending $30 for this particular rifle did not appeal to me at all. This works well, I've had it on for 8-9 months and it's is still solid.

Paracord can be very useful beyond 1970.

I used to use 550 cord back when I was in (86 - 93) wrapped it around the hand guards, made a loop, attached the sling to the loop. Same way w/buttstock. Now I got a q/d on the hand guards, 550 cord still on the butt stock. Did try running cord behind castle nut, made a loop/prayer knot, then used 2 square knots on the opposite side of the prayer knot. It worked. Hard to let go of the cord. It always worked for me. To each there own. I love the stuff!!!

From my website:
IDF Sling Attachment
This would work with most slings that have some sort of clips at the end.

Here's my effort: FDE 550 cord, modified clothes hitch knot, super glue saturated all portions of cord except loop for sling attachment.
Works perfect for my purposes, charging handle clears with no problem, feels very solid, and it's quiet.

A friend of mine makes paracord slings and he's received nothing but good reviews about them.

How did they recover the whales? Didn't they sink?
