If you keep ammo on hand you will be ready if the SHTF or a panic ensues. I never understood buying ammo by the box as you need it.
Once ive got what I deem my "reserve" thats kinda what I do..if im going to the range I will grab a box to use at range OR on the way back replace what I shot.. then I more or less "maintain" my stash.

That still costs more though. Buying a box at that days price is gonna cost more than buying a case on sale. You could still have your reserve, but just buy your shooting ammo in quantity as well.

I am not short on carry ammo. That stuff has always been getting sold out, even before the current Obama Panic. I have all my calibers covered, even for the guns I never carry, such as 25 ACP and 380 ACP.
Where I am impacted some is with the magazine shortage of some smaller guns, such as the Springfield XDs 45 ACP.
The thing that I find unbelievable is that the things not on the threatened ban list are also sold out in the current panic.
Now, if premium carry ammo gets rare, and all we find is FMJ, I will go big on the caliber and heavy on the bullet.

No changing go-to calibers here...I've got plenty of carry ammo for all the calibers I shoot, and plenty of reloading components to make plenty of practice ammo.

Changed? No, I did not but I did add a caliber 7.62mm x 39mm for some knock down power.

In a real SHTF scenario, a plus to having weapons in the popular category is some where down the line you might be able to barter for some. Who knows what it will cost you, but I would much rather be looking for 9mm the 357sig.
As far as my ammo situation I feel for my age/income I have a decent start. I would love to spend all my money on preps, but that is not realistic. At this point I am not ready to pay a arm and a leg to buy ammo on armslist/gunbroker. I know I am preaching to the choir but ammo is only one part of being prepared. If you can not buy ammo this week put your prepping funds towards some thing else.

I pretty much have the 'go to calibers' covered.
I do have some ammo that I don't have a firearm, for.
7.62x39mm.
I sold my SKS a while back, and afterward, found some ammo!
My dear old Dad always taught me to be prepared. (No, I'm not the "last Boy Scout"!)
Many years ago, when a local sports shop decided to stop selling guns/ammo, they put 100 round boxes of 9mm on sale for $9.99.
I bought a few boxes and set them aside.

"Buy it cheap. Stack it deep."

If people didn't freak out all at once there would still be plenty of things to be had at reasonable prices.
In times like these you'd do better yourself and for everyone else if you stayed calm and didn't support the price gouging by going and buying what was available on the shelf at absurd prices. It's supply and demand. Stop demanding it by buying it at the inflated prices and things will get back to normal.

I sort-of added a new caliber as the last time things got this nutty the only caliber available 'round these parts was 40S&W. Armed with that knowledge I bought the parts to build a 4" 1911 from Fusion but have not as yet performed the build.
I streamlined the hell out of my gun collection to a few calibers and started reloading since then so ammo availability is not an issue these days ....except some of my shooting buddies are so low they don't want to go out for weekly magnun-threapy!
