In what way?
Novice can't shoot? But unclassified can? Or the other way

That I haven't shot a classifier yet. I've shot IDPA four times now and love it. Rumor is we will be doing classifier at the end of the month. Judging by my scores I'm going to be a marksman.

Do you think they've been shooting action competitions for a while, but just haven't bothered to shoot a classifier?
What is their background?

Have you practised any of the classifier course? Just curious.

I actually haven't shot a classifier yet. Some guys I know have, and said they are classified as marksman. Others said they didn't classify. To me that meant the equivalent of "unclassifed". They never mentioned that they classified as novice. You have cleared that all up.
But I have practised the course, and it seems a great idea for everyone to shoot the same course. Not sure how I will do on it, but I know I won't be better than marksman, just based on my practise scores.
So without even shooting with better shooters, I have a greater appreciation for those who rate sharpshooter, expert, and masters

Just have fun, take your time, especially on the head shot portion. I'm sure you will do fine.

They dont have a classifier that tests the willingness to act.

I liked it, it really tests all your gun handling skills your likely to encounter on an IDPA course (except for prop targets). I made SSP sharpshooter my first time out. I'll do better next time, more experience shooting from cover now.....and Strong hand....and weak hand...... Just keep trying it, it helps you realize what you need to work on.
Life really sucks when you are a sharpshooter SSP at a sanctioned match...the competition is pretty stiff and there's alot of it!

That's awesome! What was your shooting experience or background before trying that?
Curious to know how you got so good

I used to shoot trap/skeet all the time. When i was in college we shot .22 pistols with a NRA instructor about once a week for a few months. But for the last 4 years or so, I hadn't really gotten to do much shooting.....no good nearby range. That changed early this spring. But honestly, I got a hold of a bunch of training videos and watched them, took notes, adjusted my grip (I was taught the weaver grip growing up) and started dry fire practice. I make it to the range about every 7-10 days now. Still amazes how much that buzzer screws with you (stress)!

I made Marksman
I was pleased with that for my first classifier. Just 8 seconds outside of Sharpshooter, which is my next goal

Hey, Congratulations! I'm still flirting with Marksman. Some weeks are better than others. Really gotta work on stage 3. Last time out I only had a total of 30 points down, and most in stage 3 (a little in 2 and 0 in stage 1) but my timing really suffered.

Thanks. I've got tons of room for improvement of course.
I went 11 points down in stage 3. No complete misses there, but I've got to tighten up that accuracy with more speed from 20 yards out. Leaning off balance is a little harder than the standing up straight shots most people usually practise before IDPA came along

That's not bad at all. More speed and accuracy will come naturally as you shoot more. Keep it up.

The IDPA classifier is a basic skill test that you can use to compare your basic gun handling & accuracy skills to other shooters. If you're a MM, you can see how you compare to MAs. It is an indicator of how you will perform in a match, but doesn't guarantee how you will perform in a match.
It's a basic skill test. Nothing more.

It says my skills aren't as good as I thought they were
But I guess it is like that with a lot of hobbies. I'm good at chess and can beat anyone I play (or so it seems), then joined a chess club and started playing other really good players, and soon found ones who can easily kick my butt.
So once you start getting into things, and join a club, and enter into competitions, no matter how good you think you are compared to the average person, you start finding some people who are a lot better than you
Well, at least that's what seems to happen to me

Your right, but it also forces/compels you to improve! If it weren't for a little healthy competition, then you'd never push yourself to improve!
