Worth the drive?
I am currently located in the cleveland OH area and saw there will be 2 matches in ohio in 2013. One in Marietta and one in Dayton. Both of these will be about a 3 hour drive (one way) for me. Ive never attended a GSSF match. Would it be worth it to take the trip?

Sure it is. I shot my first 3 this year and they were 2, 5 and 3 hours respectively. Plan 7 matches this year two 5 hour drives, two 4 hour, a 3, a 2 and a 1.5. Make it worth your time and shoot at least two divisions.

I routinely drive 6 or 7 hours, but that's not a record around here.

I have at least 2 maybe 3 8 hour drives planned for my schedule this year as well as a 4 hour to Vegas and a 5 hour flight to Georgia. Yeah, I think it's worth it!

I have 10 or 11 matches planned this year they are all 5ish hours or less except for the two GA events, yes it makes for long days. I really enjoy seeing the same folks each year and I want to improve the outcome....this is an addictive sport.

3 hour drives are the easy part. Pulling the trigger too fast after getting there is the real issue!

I live in SW Ohio above Cincinnati. Yes the drives are worth it. Like was posted before some of us drive further to shoot an event. Since you're up north you might want to consider Brighton Mi also.

Anything else a noob should know? Ive only been shooting for about 3 years and have never competed.

Just go to gssfonline.com and read the rules and youll be ready to go! start shooting center mass on 25 yd targets and get used to starting on some kind of beep or buzz.

I've been shooting since March. First match was in August.
Best advice is: "Slow is Fast!" You'll see that repeated a lot in this forum.
After my first two matches I took a little time to look at my results and realized that the largest part of my time was actually caused by misses (10 seconds apiece). Third match I slowed down a little and got faster, however, I'm still not slow enough.

When I lived in California I shot a match in Maryland and frequently traveled out of state to shoot matches. Heck yaa GSSF is worth a 3 hour drive.

Bring at least 4 mags and around 125 rds of ammo for each class/division you shoot. The extra ammo is in case of a re-shoot. Like Alex29 said read the rules online or in the annual. The RO's will be helpful where ever you shoot. Tell them you are new when you go to shoot. They will talk you thru it. Don't be afraid to ask anyone standing around at the stages for advise or help/info. Watching is a great help. Always have your mags loaded before you get up to shoot. GSSF is a friendly group of people. Don't worry about a miss or going slow. My goal is to shoot better than any of my previous personnal bests. I don't worry what others shoot, I shoot against my own times. I can only hope to improve, and have with practice and shooting matches. My adice would be don't try to beat a Grady, Butch or Alex29 your first time out. Shoot your best and the rest will come as you progress. Heck randoms make it worthwhile. I win money in randoms every year I shoot and haven't paid a yearly membership since my first yearly 8 years ago. Reason being is I usually win a random 2 year extension. Look into the GSSF indoor matches also.

I'll drive 16 hours to shoot Marietta. Maybe if you have to ask it isnt "worth it" to make the 3 hour drive.

You mean you have that much spare time from doing Bamas chores and gun maintenance?

My friend Bama helped me out the other day making my citizenship in the Great State of Alabama official. No commit on moving into the shed in his back yard.
