200 gr 1100 fps 10mm lead slug

The ultimate hot poker.

I would be curious to see if there is any expansion on the 200 gr bullet if you used the deep cavity insert. I purchased the same mold, but have never poured my own boolits.

Thanks for the gel test.

it's a friend's mold but I plan on testing a larger cavity. first I'll test the same bullet at higher velocity.

I've thought about picking up some critical duty for 45ACP and 9mm. Looks like only Cabelas only carries the 10mm variety. Despite the lower velocity, it still seems to perform well.

Absolutely. I'm pretty sure you could get to that velocity with that projectile in .40 S&W but it does perform well for a pistol.

I can't believe you are not getting expansion with the mihec. I get great expansion with mine. But I also push mine hotter than you are in these tests. 1250 is the slowest I have done. I like them at 1350 when cast with ww and 20% pure.

I should post a pic of an expanded shallow hp I recovered from a deer.

I am wondering if the casting u are using is of too hard of lead. Or your speed is not enough.

After watching the vid it looks like it expanded a little. To size. I think if you add another 100 or 200 fps it will open nice.

Some load data of you want it.

9.4 gr 800x. Will do 1350ish out of a 6in barrel.

9.7 will do right at 1400ish

9.1 will do around 1310 ish

Those are all loads I shoot often. The 9.4 I think shoots the best group.

Those are all under the 37,500 saami. Granted 800x in the books usually is not pushed more than low 30s for some reason.

The bullets were cast by a friend and were supposed to be 16:1 but the performance made him wonder if maybe the ingot he used wasn't pure lead. Today he said they measured 14.3 BHN. 16:1 should measure 10.3 BHN.

Thanks for the data, ctious. We definitely plan to test this at a higher velocity.

14.3 is a little hard. That must explain is all. If it was 10.3 I am sure u would have good exp at the speedu have been shooting.

I'm sure you're right. We'll test again. I'd like to find a load that will get me a little under 0.500" expansion and still come in over 20" of penetration.

That is more or less what I get with my mix and load. With your hardness u might need even a little more than my loads give. With my crappy media. Wet mud/dirt I get around .45in.
I am excited to see your next test with softer alloy or kicking up the speed.

That would be perfect. What I'm looking for is a load well suited for defense against smallish Arizona bears but I'd like it to have just enough expansion that it still gets good penetration. I want to have my cake and eat it, too.

Woods defense is one of the main reasons I got a 10mm in the first place. 9mm, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP are perfectly adequate for human defense and honestly probably better because of the lighter recoil. You can load them with FMJ and get decent penetration for woods defense but without a flat, wide meplat you're not getting much tissue cutting.
