Buckmark new vs old model slingshot

Is the Buckmark slide designed to be released using the slingshot method when chambering a round from a full magazine or do you need to use the slide release lever?

I tried the slingshot method but the slide release lever remains in place. I shot a Buckmark at my local range last year and I was pretty certain I was able to use the slingshot method. Are the newer model different from the older models?

I've seen older Buckmarks do that when they get really dirty/dry.

Don't have, and have never shot, a newer model.
