Nylon or brass punch for rear sight removal.

I'm going to install night sights on my G23.Which punch would be best for the job at hand?

You could probably use a wooden dowel to take the plastic sights off. I use a Brownells punch with removable tips. You can get different sized tips in nylon, aluminum and brass.

I use a brass tip that is ground half way down so there is a large flat area to match the contact area of the base of the sights.

Edit: Remember to tap out left to right, in right to left, looking down from the slide cover plate.

I have used in the past the wooden dowel, and then discovered Delrin punches at Brownells. then found out one can purchase a 3 foot section of Delrin rod at Home Depot much more cheaply and cut my own to length. SJ 40

Glocks for me have been much easier to install new sights. Nice pistol to learn on. Just make sure you can install by hand the rear sight 1/2 way in and have some nice small files to work down the sight. Watch a lot of you/tube clips before you start.

Easiest yet are Aro-Tek sights. They give you a tool to screw in the front and the rear slide on and get tightened with a allen wrench that they give you. Just tap out the Glock rear and you're ready to go.

Side view of Aro-Tek compared to Glock. You can see the allen screws.

Thanks for all the great advice. Just finished the install. I padded my vice with wood shims, and used a wooden dowel as a punch. Surprised at how easy installation was. The Dawson video is great!

Nobody at my local Home Depot seems to know what a Delrin
rod is or where they would be in the store. I walked the whole
store and all I could find was the wooden dowels. Can anyone
please give me an idea what part of Home Depot they have
those Delrin rods as I'd like to buy a couple of them myself?

Thanks,
David

I couldn't find Delrin rods on the Home Depot website; but I read on another forum that a nylon bolt would work, which Home Depot has in their stores.

For those interested in the Delrin rod I located it in a 33" length x 3/8" diameter in the hardware section of my local H D.

I wished now that I had hung on to the SKU tag on the rod to be able to post that, perhaps not every HD carries the same stocking items in all stores.

Here is a listing from Brownells for 5/16" diameter x 4" nylon punches that I have used prior to finding the Delrin rod at HD. SJ 40

I started out using that type of punch from Brownells and they always worked fine for Glocks. I switched to the one I showed it post #2 when I had to remove some sights from a S&W and required a little more force.

I'd still look at a local hardware just to save the shipping if that's all you're going to order.
