Senate passes Internet sales tax bill.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology...les-tax-amazon

The more I think about it, the more sense it makes to me.

I own a small online business... It is not good news, nor does it make any sense to me.

Relax. It's for retailers with sales over $1,000,000.

Are you one of them?

Not yet, but that's the goal, and it's not far off... Besides, how long until they cut that million in half?

On a side note... I'm as relaxed as they come.

No, this is not a good law. Not good at all. Fortunately it looks unlikely to pass the house.

Exactly how most taxes start. Small. Only the rich. Yada yada yada.

Just another money grab. Pure tax increase.

It doesnt take much to have sales over 1,000,000.

If you can eek out 5% net margins (margins can get thin online) that means you made 50 grand.

In a lot of cases, for 50 grand a year, it might be a lot easier to have been a nurse or fireman.

I get why they want to do it. But I really don't think its practical for any business to try to charge tax for each customer they sell to outside of their state.

Even if we are just doing it at the state level (some cities have sale taxes too) that's still 50 tax codes every business has to keep up with.

I'm guessing Internet retail net margins are much higher than 5%. The ones I know are doing about 20%-35%.

There is software that will do it for you, just punch in a zip code and it can compute taxes.

There is no increase in taxes, only a change in how they are collected.

I'm aware of that, I write software for a living. There are a lot of costs that go along with it. The licenses and yearly updates aren't free. Not to mention the hardware to process it and integration into existing systems.

And this is a big surprise from a DemoRat controlled Senate?

Show me a tax that a Liberal doesn't love.

If I'm not paying taxes now on internet purchases, but I'm forced to pay if/when this bill is passed, that's a new tax! That's more money out of my pocket!

Every single item I sell has been taxed once already. Even the "new" items I sell, are "used".. In my opinion, when you tax an item twice, you're raising taxes.

Just because you're evading taxes (assuming you live in an area with sales tax, if you don't this law won't affect you) now doesn't mean they don't exist.

No, it's addressing your evasion. HH

So being audited by several hundred taxing authorities is no big deal? Really?
