Grill parts, do you replace them?

I have a Charbroil grille from Lowes. It isnt the best but wasnt cheap either.
I had this stupid mouse who kept trying to build a nest in it. One day i forgot and burned it up in there...another one has since built another nest. I really do not want to eat out of that thing EVER...
the wife insists it will be fine if we burn it for a while on high heat....
All we need she says is some new grill plates and so on.....
What say you guys?
for the future new grill, how do you keep a mouse out of it?

Grill parts are expensive. Cheaper to replace the grill if its a few years old.

The only parts I've replaced on my grill have been the "flavor bars" that guard the gas burners. I need to replace the grates but I'm having trouble locating those. I'm biding my time until I can do the full outdoor kitchen thing then the old grill will be history.

Wait until the end of the season and Walmart clearances grill parts when the Halloween crap takes over the outdoor dept. Four burners, four flavor bars, an ignitor and a set of grates for under $50. HH

It really depends on how much it would cost to replace vs. buying new parts. I agree with your wife. Heat the grill up and let it burn off whatever mouse residue there is. BTW, your wife sounds tougher than you do.

she is freakin tough...she could take most men before they knew what happened...

Once up to operating temps the mouse problem doesn't exist anymore. Parts on the other hand add up quickly. I have replaced a few parts and after that I preferred to just buy a new grill. Good luck. tom.

Couple of years ago I used our oven to re-sleeve a set of Norton cylinders. Food tasted like Castrol for weeks & the wife wasn't happy at all... HH

I'd crank it up and put in a cast iron box full of some wood chips to get some good smokey smell. A mouse is meat anyhow so it's not like it's the end of the world. If you want to prevent them from getting in look for the ignighter holes, drip holes, etc to see where they are getting in and make some sort of easy out plugs to cover those holes. You could probably also rivet in some little metal sheets that would cover them then just spin out of the way when cooking.

Pffft, heat that baby up on high for a couple hours and it will be sterilized. I've cooked a birds nest or two.

It is not so much the mouse meat as it is the crap and urine..the smell is horrid...

I was pretty much in the corner with your wife and others for the "just fire it up, heat it up, and it will be fine" method. Now I may have passed your "new parts" corner and be in the lone, perhaps irrational, "new grill" time out corner by myself.

But if I were to keep it I think I would spray everything down with bleach, let it sit a while, then rinse. Probably repeat that. Then I would want to put it in the sunlight for a few hours with the lid open. Then I would want to fire it up and get it hot as it gets for more than a few minutes.

Steel wool works great at plugging holes. Mice can't chew through it, and it's cheap and easy to apply. You could always put a box of dcon rodent killer on top of the grill at the end of the season (assuming you don't use it year round), and just take it out in the spring.

If you've ever used a bbq at a public park or campground, you've used one that birds, mice, and probably all sorts of other animals (2 and 4 legged) may have peed and / or pooped in. If it was me, I'd just clean out any obvious mouse turds or other goop inside the bbq, heat it up, and go.

No freaking kidding. Nothing better than freaking flames to disinfect stuff. Clean out the nest and mouse parts or whatever, and just let the grill burn off the rest.

Those of us who grill don't have mouse issues.


Parts aren't cheap, but a seasoned grill is worth keeping if you're just replacing a grate.

I don't use gas, so the parts are much less expensive.

If is one of those Infrared, then I would just use the wire brush tool with the drill and re-cure the grates. If the mouse is under the burners, that whole plate comes off by removing two or four screws under the front side, right when you open the doors. Last but not least, I would use lime powder for odors if is under the burners an you can't access it.

I'm not an expert, but plugging up all the holes a mouse could get into doesn't sound like the best idea to me. Those things have to have an air inflow to burn properly. Plug up all the holes and it may not burn properly, or worse, like maybe kaboom?

I'd go with the fire it up on the hottest setting for half an hour or so recommendation. Or the bleach and sun and then fire it up solution.

I have a TEC Infrared with all the bells and whistles which I picked up in the late 90's.
I replace he parts as and when they wear out.

I am happy with the results much cheaper than buying a new one.
