Had to put one of my dogs down.

Freddie was a ten pound terror. He would have died trying to protect us from any and all harm. His old age (17), blindness and deafness were becoming too profound and while on our daily walk around the lake he became disoriented and jumped off a 12 foot bank and landed in the lake. Somewhere in that process he impaled himself through the lung.

No vets were open so I told my wife and daughter to go inside and wait for me to tell them it was over. Between the tears I was able to properly place a 22 magnum and it was over before he hit the ground. He was buried with all the other pets, but he got some of the prime real estate with a view of the pasture and the lake.

Wasn't really sure I could do it but when you know it must be done to end his suffering you have to muster the resolve. The other two dogs are in mourning, just like the rest of the family.

There are many people in this world who I will not miss a much as I will miss this dog.

Been there brother...

It is worse when you have to do it yourself, but you did the right thing. Just too bad that we have to lose members of our family like that.

It may not seem like it, but that was an act of love. It would have been far worse to allow him to suffer.

Remember the good times, it sounds like there were plenty of them.

You made the best of a really tough situation. Remember the good times - 17 years is a heck of a run for any dog.

As an aside, my father was a big believer in euthanizing any of our animals when time. Let's just say I've done what you had to do several times - even though it's proper and honorable it still sucks.

What I'd give for 17 years with an animal that was my best friend ...

Don't cry because it is over, smile because it happened.

You were so lucky to have a dedicated member of your family pack for so long. They set a good example of what devotion to others really means.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I, as many other animal lovers, have been there too and it hurts your heart so much. It is also so sad to see age take its toll after many years, but you love them so much you don't want to hurry their departure.

I commend you for the courage to do what was necessary at the appropriate time. This is the most difficult example of love.

His memories will stay alive as long as you and your family.

so sorry to hear about Freddie. He was obviously loved, and loved you. And I agree, I prefer my two dogs company to most people. They will love you with their last breath and ask for nothing but love in return. What more can you ask for in a companion. You will see him again at the Rainbow Bridge

Also well said, I've been there too, one of the hardest things I've had to do.
