I use FedEx for handguns. Better customer service hours than UPS at the local hub.

UPS or FedEx....both cost about the same. Has to be over night.

I only shipped one once.
I had to send my early S&W 686 back
for the firing pin replacement.
I sent it registered mail.

Now, yes... but that wasn't always true... some folks have been on the planet longer than others.

Then why even bring it up? The OP wants to know the best way today. Gas used to be 28 cents a gallon but who cares today?

If I'm selling it goes USPS and if it for repair or modification UPS.

Thanks for stopping by...

Not sure about best but my guess is that if one could get their FFL to send it by USPS it might be less expensive. I would also guess that it costs the manufacturer less to send a call tag then it does for us to ship it to them.

cheapest way would be to find a ffl that will send it for you. he can send it to them in flat rate box for 10 bucks.
if you send it yourself, you can use fedex or UPS. you will need to send it next day air which will cost a lot. but it will be sent back to you directly

I have only every sent back stuff through FedEx.
Never a complaint and things always got there on time with good tracking.

I've had better luck with FedEx than with the local ups hub.
The ups lady likes to make up her own rules like demanding to see the recipients FFL and inspecting to make sure the gun is disassembled.
I set up a personal FedEx account and print off the shipping label at home, then just drop it off at the service center.
posted from my stupid smart phone, please excuse any spelling mistakes.
