Mac osX - burning an ISO
I'm using an old motorola mac and downloaded an ISO of ubuntu that I am going to install on a new PC along with win7.
How the heck to I get the image to burn on a cd correctly?

If it's one of the G5 Mac's (ie, not an Intel Mac).. you're wasting your time. Ubuntu does not have a version of it's OS that runs on Mac hardware anymore. There are some other distros that do though.
Edit: Sorry, I just saw you're wanting to put Ubuntu on a Win 7 machine.
But as for how to burn an ISO with a Mac...

On the "daily release" servers there are PowerPC Mac iso's for Kubuntu and I think the other versions of Ubuntu too. I was just looking at the Kubuntu ones. That Mac may be too old though. The other thing is I think the newest iso's are DVD size and not CD size. Well Ubuntu, Kubuntu and the next or current version of Xubuntu are only DVD size. Lubuntu is likely still CD size. The G4 and G5 Mac's can use the Ubuntu iso's for Mac but the early G3's and earlier Mac models may not work with them.
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PowerPCDownloads/
Oikay now I am the one that reread and see you want to burn an iso for a PC, not a Mac.
The newer iso's are mostly DVD's and not CD's. Lubuntu or MAYBE the last version of Xubuntu will fit a CD.

What ISO are you downloading? They are all made to fit on a CD. They have a DVD ISO (which is essentially designed for machines w/o an internet connection), but they also have a CD ISO.. it should fit on any 700mb CD

The latest iso's are DVD size. They are too large for a CD.

ubuntu-12.10-desktop-i386.iso
I reread the description. Needs a DVD. Arg. Too bad I don't have one. Oh well.

"burn" it to a bootable USB drive.
Just Google "USB Linux installer" and you'll get all kinds of options.

This will work, but I doubt that Mac will boot USB, but you could create the USB on the Mac.
http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/
Also, keep in mind.. if you're putting this on a Win 7 machine (which I assume is 64bit).. 386 is the 32bit version.

Ubuntu still recommends using the 32 bit version. There are many popular applications that won't run on the 64 bit version without a whole lot of configuring. It may be best fora beginner to use the 32 bit version. I was surprised too to see that Ubuntu still recommends using the 32 bit version. The PAE kernel can be installed to use all of the memory. I tried the 64 bit version and my CAD program wouldn't run without a bunch of configuring. I think Wine works better or more fully in the 32 bit OS for people that want to run Windows programs in Linux. The 64 bit version still has some issues but sticking with using only the Ubuntu 64 bit software should avoid any problems.
Right now I'm running a hybrid version of Debian Linux using a 64 bit kernel in a 32 bit system. All of the applications are 32 bit with only the kernel being 64 bit. I learned this trick from the odd requirements of the 64 bit PowerPC G5 Mac's. The system runs faster this way than any other configuration.

I see now Ubuntu recommends using the 64 bit version for PC's that came with 64 bit Windows 8 and secure boot but recommends using the 32 bit version with 64 bit Windows 7.

Back in the day, I'd have agreed with you.. however most 32bit apps (Skype for example) that are not ported for 64bit.. will automatically install 32bit libraries to make them work.
I've yet to run into anything that will run on 32bit, and not on 64bit.
