Barrel length, in and of itself, should have very little to do with how well it will pattern. The difference in patterns between a 28" barrel and a 20" barrel, given the same choke, would come down to one shot charge having an 8" handicap to the target.

I suggest you try some much closer distances, from touching the target to something less than 50 feet, I have seem shotgun used a few times while building clearing and none were more than 25 feet or so. Think about it, most rooms are less than 15x20 feet or so. For home defense you will have a pattern no bigger than a half dollar.

Send me the ammo and will be glad to. I think differences in patterns at less than 25 feet will be marginal at best. This test was in particular to benefit myself and my situation with my gun and brands of ammo that I buy to know the capabilities of my gun. On that note, I will be testing out to 25 yards and maybe longer because again I like knowing what any of my guns can do with as many variables as I can throw in there--plus it's my ammo, I'll shoot what I want. The more datapoints, the better. Whether I post those results are yet to be determined.

On another note, if anyone owns a shotgun, they should have already done this and have their own datapoints and shouldn't rely on the Internet to suggest how their gun might perform.

While I am all for testing loads, considering any shot pattern in the home ( inside say thirty get max inside the house) is going to be only a few inches in diameter it is not going to matter much except to confirm poa. My standard load is pretty much one round of birdshot up first ( a little less lethal if you only need one to run the bad guy off) then buck the rest of the tube. Side saddle has four more buck, one bird (may need to put down a rabid raccoon up close- lots of them around my house) and one slug

But it is hard for me to find Flite Control with the ammunition crunch on. so usually I settle for Sellier and Bellot 00 buck in the 25 round box. Then I have to rely on my barrel to do the flight control for me.

No need to spend big money on your HD load. I keep cheap Federal Power Shock #4 27 pellet buck in my HD gun.

I do carry Federal Flite-Control OO buck in my patrol shotgun though.
