Clip vs. Magazine

[pre-emptive duck and run]

First of all, I have never referred to a magazine as a "clip."

I have, however, seen some GT posters use that term -- and get torched for doing so.

Just wondering...why is a magazine called a "clip"? Is there a legitimate use for the term "clip" (other than "money clip" "paper clip" "belt clip" etc., etc.)??

there is such a thing as a "clip". They are metal or plastic bars that hold rounds loosely, you insert "clip" and strip the rounds off, thus loading a fixed or detachable "magazine" on the weapon.

A "Magazine" holds rounds, and assists with feeding of the ammo. A "clip" assists in loading the "magazine".

Hollywood is partly to blame for the confusion.

Many semi-auto firearms use a small metal clip that holds the ammo. Look up how an M-1 Garand works.

M1 Garand rifles are loaded with 8 rounds in a clip inserted into the magazine.

Probably has it's roots in TV writers who have no clue what they are talking about.

Clips go in magazines, magazines go in guns.

The military even used the term in reference to the M16. During Vietnam they had this comic book they gave out on stripping , cleaning etc. it refers to the mags as clips.
I still have my comic I suspect its a collectors item these days

So did Marlin when advertising some of their .22 rifles....

"Complete with 7-round clip magazine"

I only get pissed at anti-gun people for calling magazines 'clips'. I let it slide when my buddies do it.

A magazine feeds the gun, a clip feeds the magazine.

At least that's how I think about it. I mean, it makes sense, doesn't it? Either way, I don't get annoyed when people use them interchangeably, but I do correct them in a non-pretentious way.

Except for Marlin... them calling their .22 magazines "clips" bothers the hell out of me.

It doesn't matter. Yes calling a magazine a clip aggravates the cognizant. So what? They are not the ones who determine how vocabulary will be used. There aren't enough of them. The general public makes that determination. And the general public just does not consider that there is any worthwhile distinction to be made between a clip and a magazine. So... they use the word "clip" as a generic designation for both clips and magazines. It grates on the sensibilities of some.
