IL would top my list... and that's mostly because of Chicago. Chicago would be an armpit city even if it had good gun laws.

Even though I've been there many times, I realized long ago that there is nothing pretty about Florida that isn't man made.

Texas. I wouldn't say it was awful, but I don't know how anyone who wasn't born and raised there could willingly move there and call it home. It's the land of dirt, and unrelenting heat. Two weeks ago, when I was in Austin, it was 80°, overcast, and nasty. I turned down a pretty good job, because I couldn't leave Oregon for Texas.
However, when it comes to roads, Texas is incredible. I've been living in the stone age all my life. Texas is serious when it comes to accommodating motor vehicles, and facilitating vital commerce throughout the state.

Everyone in New England should be forced to relocated to Canada, and then it could be repurposed as a wilderness preserve. New England is beautiful, but the people sure do ruin it.
And everyone in South Carolina should be required to take English lessons. I have no idea what language people speak there, I just know that I can't understand a word they say.

I've been all over, when you eliminate mountains or hills as a factor, Florida is da bombdiggity!
Get off the highway, into the woods, or on one of our "three coast" or countless rivers/creeks. Florida is some beautiful territory.
BTW- Frog hunting permits come out on March 8th. Ribbit

I did not enjoy driving through Nebraska or Kansas. Too flat and nothing to see. Did not like Chicago. Too many tolls, parking was way too much and traffic was horrible.

Still it is very beautiful country, and I did make the acquaintance of a really very intelligent, pretty and talented lady out there, when we hooked up months later I discovered she was a most outstanding headmistress.
On my return visit it was a loooooong drive in from Winnipeg. Some of the most beautiful parts of the country.
In summary, I've been to every state, at least 3 times, including Hawaii, and all of them have their great pluses - including NJ, which is the only state in the nation where every county is classified as "urban".

I worked all over the state of ND at a job I had back in the late '70s. I have to assume you were in the east side, by a sugar beet processing plant. That is a sour smell.

Kansas isn't so bad. You have to appreciate the wide open prairie. I enjoy a road trip across the great plains once and a while.
I have traveled through western OK a few times. From Texahoma to Liberal, KS. There is not much there.

Geographically, there is nothing wrong with IL. It is too bad it is stuck with Chicago.

I like Wisconsin - great fishing and hunting. Beautiful lakes and rivers.
Nebraska has great bird hunting and massive white tale.
I don't know what state you're from ASH, but their school systems must be aweful.

Texas is mind numbingly ugly (or at least 90% of it is). I spent my first 24yrs in CT, and have been to MA/RI/NH/Vt/NY, but I've never been to Maine. You can't get there from here.

I didn't enjoy Michigan. The UP got boring for me, because you can only look at trees for so long. It was nice along the Great Lakes.
I couldn't get out of Detroit fast enough. Four hours was longer than I wanted to be there.

Chicago does ruin IL for me. I don't have a problem with the rest of IL except of course for gun control laws. A lot of our road trips could be more easily done by driving thru IL on I70. In every case I dip down to the southern tip of IL (near Cairo) where I still have to drive about ONE mile on IL soil.

Michigan! Nothin good comes from that state. I feel like its self explanatory why I don't like it there.

yes, Gary In is the suck.
but even my beloved State of Indiana is incredibly diverse. I know because I have traveled the state in my job for 38 years.
To think folks living in Madison In have the same governor and Senators as those from Lake county is amazing.
People in the far northwest tend to be decendents of Eastern Europe, and sound like people from Chicago. Those in Evansville, New Albany speak with unique mix of southern accents.
Indy people are big city, with a rich mix of races, cultures.
Any state you have just driven through part of, you don't really know.

The whole area west and south of and including Chicago. It includes IL, IN and WI. Gary, Schaumburg, Beloit, Janesville. Nasty areas.
I love western WI, Southern IN and Southern IL though.
Rural Delaware is strange. Don't care for Detroilet. Northern FL near GA is hell..

I have been to New York, New York. I really, really hate it. The people are pissed off 24/7. The airport is full of pigeons. I have been to third world countries that don't have holes in the walls and pigeons flying around.
New York, New York sucks the big one.

Hard to argue the charm of the South. I just couldn't do the heat and humidity. Summers as a kid in Southern Indiana nearly killed me.
