Reserve officer in off duty shooting (no worries, right ones got shot)

Women's basketball coach walking 2 players to car after night game accosted by two good boys who would never touch a gun, who then pulled the gun they would never touch and announced a robbery. Coach pulled his gun and shot both, one fatally, one in stomach. Coach might have been in hot water over being armed in a pistol free zone (school) but for the fact he was a reserve officer, who is exempt from pistol free zones.

The high school in question is Martin Luther King High School. They were judged by the content of their character, not the color of their skin.

Will post a link when I get home. I heard he was in custody for a while, not sure what they were thinking. I originally thought they were going to jam him up on carrying in school before another report identified him as reserve. Surveillance video confirms his side of story, he's been released now. DPD used to give reserves 40 hrs of firearms training, same as regular officers. He put it to good use.

Sad a kid had to die, but he brought it on himself. Hopefully this its a wakeup call for the surviving friend.

Randy

Sounds like one for the good guys to me. Hope the kids he was escorting aren't traumatized by it.

I remember an old Chris Rock bit about how MLK stood for nonviolence, but anywhere something is named for him, "there's some violence going down."

Sounds like a good ending to the story. Screw those would be criminals. Victim selection fail.

For once, "Where's a cop when you need one," had the appropriate answer, "Right here, kids, right here!"

What did I hear just now...repeat that. "But, Russ, he was not an on-duty cop."

Yeah, you're right. Okay, this is good, pay attention, he was an educator carrying a firearm while performing one of his duties as an educator. That is even better considering the talk these days. An armed educator prevented harm to students.

WHAT? Say that again..."Russ, he wasn't carrying as an educator, he carried because he's a reserve cop."

I'm confused. You didn't like the "Where's a cop when you need one." Now you don't like that he is an educator carrying and saved students from harm because he was carrying because he's a police officer.

So, you do not want to give him credit for being a cop at the right place at the right time because he was not on duty. You do not want to give him credit for being an armed educator at the right place at the right time because he carried because he's a cop.

How about this? An armed citizen with a CPL was at the right place at the right time to save students at the local high school. "Russ, no, he was there as a coach, not a random citizen" He was...never mind...some people just like being miserable when good things happen. Go away, crawl back under your bridge.

A huge THANK YOU to the reserve police officer. This gentleman is 70 years old and per this article is not employed by the school system as a teacher.

He does have a Michigan Concealed Pistol License (CPL).

These Pistol-Free Zones are actually Criminal Enterprize Zones where the thugs think that everyone is disarmed... except them of course.

Good to see one is DRT and the second will hopefully be charged with capital murder.

This is the way to stop DETOILET thugs!!!!

Of the four reserve academies that I'm familiar with in SE Michigan, all teach the 40-hour MCOLES basic pistol qualification course. Some offer long gun and one had a day of sim training. Does DPD still have reserves Randy?

They sure do, they like to hire from the reserve force from what I hear, although probably not the 70 year olds like this guy...
