How is this possible?

"The Postal Service continues to suffer losses of $36 million a day and is headed for projected losses of about $21 billion a year by 2016."

Is this amount included in our national debt that everyone is always griping about?

Not necessarily. From Wikipedia:

"The USPS has not directly received taxpayer-dollars since the early 1980s with the minor exception of subsidies for costs associated with the disabled and overseas voters."

For how many years has there been talk of doing this?

I'll believe it when I see it happening.

I see no reason to have delivery daily. 3 days a week would be fine, Monday, Wednesday, Friday.

In my town, they won't even deliver your mail, period, if your within town limits. Also, our post office is CLOSED on Saturdays.

The postal employees, were against 5 day delivery..or at least the union was..
OverTime, personal days, sick days, maternity leave, holidays, workers off work due to injury, vacation..
As explained to me by my postal delivery person..The loss of Saturday delivery in rural locations would not result in any monetary gain for the PO's.. They still have all the perks as described above, and fewer carriers will result in OT for current carriers..
As he described, it is a mess at the PO..

Federales aren't responsible for Postal Service debts.

Saturday delivery needs to die. Honestly, they should do what UPS and FedEx does - take 2 days off EVERYWHERE. The problem with no-Saturday in a business district is that all the backlog must be delivered on Monday. Shut down processing as well and there will be 5 days a week of "normal" mail and no heavy-flow Mondays.

If the USPS is still going to handle packages on Saturdays, what's the point of not delivering the rest of the stuff?

Supposedly they are losing $15 billion a year and this will save $2 billion a year.....delaying the inevitable.

They should charge the same rate to business for 'junk mailers' as they do us to increase revenue.

The Post Office loses money every year because it's run by the government, and the government literally confiscates a large chunk of their profits each year.

Take it out of the governments control and let a company like UPS or Fed-Ex take it over.

Deliver mail on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

You have a block of houses, say, 10 to a block, 10 blocks to a route (I'm making numbers up here, I have no idea how many houses a postman delivers to) - 100 houses.

3 packages to be delivered on Saturday.

How much of a time-savings do you think there is from stopping at 3 places vs walking to 100?

I'm still waiting for my 2010 Victoria Secret catalog, you F'er!

Saturday package delivery is stupid. Stop it all together. And a big fat YEAH to charging catalog houses more. Maybe they'll be more discriminating.

I think that postage at 46c (or is it 48?) is pretty cheap to get a letter from Massachusetts to California in a couple of days.

I don't think they'll stop package delivery because of things like medical deliveries. Some of those are pretty time-sensitive and a two-day gap (Sat and Sun) could be a problem.

Are they going to charge extra for Saturday delivery, like FedEx and UPS?

Probably not.

Know why UPS and FedEx charge for it????
