Putting down animals.
Specifically deer.
I don't know if its just my area and they are ghetto deer but these dang things will just shrug off an F250 collision and jump around on 2 legs in a ditch.
It took 4 shots to the back of the deer head and this thing was still kicking.
Last week my partner had to pull out the ol 870 after 3 rounds to the back of the head.
.40 s&w. winchester ranger and some are usinf federal hst, we probably put down 2-3 deer a week, more so lately. Any ideas on the quickest way to put them down?

The animal will have "death throws" for a few seconds. Just let it do its thing.

Copy that.
They generally kick around for a few seconds and then go. I'm gonna just go to 00 buck in te 870 from now on.

Safer with 00 anyway compared to your service pistol. Pistol round has small chance of ricochet if it happens to go thru and hit pavement

Haha those flinchers were the best in the academy and at shotgun recertification. Always good for a laugh

I generally try to get them down into a ditch first.

As odd as it sounds, if this is an ongoing issue in your area try putting in a call to California Highway Patrol Headquarters in Sacramento. They publish a manual, complete with diagrams, showing where (shot placement) and how to put down just about every kind of injured animal you may encounter.
If you ask nicely, they might just send a copy to your department address.

This OC, its just part of the deal, even when you hunt and get a good clean ethical kill, its rarely instant. Get a good shot and let mother nature take over.

I always use a shotgun, and I never aim for the head. The brain is a small target in a deer and easy to miss if you dont know exactly where to aim.
I aim for a double lung shot, and I usually back up a few steps so the pellets will have a few inches of spread. Puts them down cleanly everytime, you get both lungs, usually injure the heart, and all the coronary arteries in between. 10yds is about the perfect distance.
Keeping a shell of 27 pellet #4 buck would be a great idea, it works great on deer up close.

1 or 2 solid ASP strikes to the flat spot on the head will do it every time.....

The only time I've put down a deer and it didn't flop around for awhile was when I shot one in the back of the head at a 45 degree angle, mafia execution style. That deer was DRT.
I had a deer once who dragged itself by its front legs (hind legs were barely attached) through a trailer park faster then I could jog after it. Myself and the original 911 caller chased the thing through front yards and over & under fences. It finally ran into some woods but it still would not let me get close enough to it for an accurate pistol shot. I ended up shooting it from 25-30 yards away with the AR. A single 5.56 round, just under the eye, killed it instantly. If I could I'd use the AR for every deer now. But that's not going to happen.

Back of the head at a downward angle seems to be most efficient. Don't try the lung shots with a duty pistol, I've seen guys unload full magazines trying to get one to stop moving.
Some of those things are very resiliant.

Remember, at close range your shots will impact about an inch under the top of your front sight. Seen some messy animal dispatches due to this!

I use a 22 pistol or rifle with subsonic HP, one shot back of the head. Aim just above the axis, where the spine and skull join. At night I blind it with the spotlight or my streamlight so it can't see me coming up from behind. I have also done it with a Beretta 950 25ACP. Worked just as good as a 22.
Just be aware of what's downrange and plan accordingly.
Yeah, it'll flop some.

Ths is important to remember. Even at contact distances it's going low. If you approach the animal from behind so it can't see you it won't panic as much.
