Need to workout
Just watched a new episode of COPS on DVR.
This cop in Atlanta almost died trying to keep up with a 300 lbs fat brother and the cop didn't even look too out of shape. Prolly too much delish fried okra.
I need to work out more too.
That is all.

I've gained some weight. shamefully, I've gotten so fat, I had to move my duty belt out a notch. It's embarrassing. Since then, I've cut down on what I eat and made it to the gym more regularly. I managed to lose a few pounds, but I have a ways to go. I've also switched up my workouts, which will help me, if I can get to the gym regularly. Right now, once a week is regular compared to October through December of last year.
Most of my weight gain has been due to a lack of activity on duty. The last couple of months have been death on midnights. It doesn't matter how motivated you are when you don't see a non-cop human for hours, at a time. There hasn't been anything going on. I have to get out of the mobile observation platform every couple of hours, just to stretch my legs.
Now, I'm working evenings. After only a couple of days, I am feeling much better. I am getting caught up on sleep; still not there, yet. There's also a lot more going on! Not hard-core crime, lately, but at least I can make a car stop within minutes of whenever I please. After over four years on midnights, I needed a change of pace. Hopefully, the weather will be nice, in March, and people will be back out in the dark. The sun hurts my eyes!

I can't seem to lose weight either. I've tried everything but diet and exercise, nothing seems to work...

I found a really easy way to lose weight. It's called a severe sinus infection. I lost 7 pounds last week from it.

I was on bike patrol for like 3 years and absolutely loved it. I considered it being paid to work out! When I got off bike patrol, the pounds came back on quickly and I'm still struggling to get it off. Working nights doesnt help either... ;(

A little over two years ago I stepped on the scale, and it read 220. It's the heaviest I've ever weighed. I didn't like the way I felt or how I looked in the mirror.
I started swimming again, and watching what I ate. I dropped about 20 pounds in 8 months, then I started P90X (in addition to the swimming and diet change). Within 6 months I was at 176. I hadn't weighed that since I was a young 20 year old hard charger.
About 6 months ago I began incorporating heavy lifting into my workout routines and I've slowing started to gain weight, but its the good weight (lean muscle mass). I'm holding steady at around 188-190 right now.
I've learned a few important things over the last 2 years...
It not about dieting. It's about a lifestyle change. Dieting is temporary. A lifestyle change is forever.
Like anything else, you get out of it what you put into it. If you won't make the time to go to the gym, or if you won't workout, you won't change a thing. You have to push yourself.
I'm no youngster anymore. I can't bounce back like I used to. When your body tells you to take a break, take a break.
Results take longer. But they do occur. Stick with it. Don't get discouraged.
Set goals. Realistic goals. Work toward those goals.
Get a workout buddy, or three. It's easier with friends.

I just do Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I'm in better shape then when I was in the academy and it makes everything easier. including running.

txleapd, that's a success story there. Patience and perseverance is the only thing that works long-term. 1-2 lbs/week is normal weight loss for most overweight adults who are exercising AND eating healthy. Diet fads are temporary as you mention, because is usually involves something (unrealistic calorie or nutrient restrictions, super-special shakes, etc.) that you cannot do forever... they are usually unhealthy overall and expensive. Once you stop, the weight comes back.
Nike had the slogan right... just do it. It can be really hard with this job and weird schedules. Between working, sleeping, eating, grad school, and GlockTalk, working out is on the list for me but usually comes last.

How do you just "do" Brazilian Jiu Jitsu? Seems like a certain skillset of that particular martial art would be needed. Lately I've been interested in some sort of fighting workout (never done anything along those lines before), so I'm interested in any details.

Me too brother. I have lost 20lbs in the last 5 months, but am still being lazy about the cardio. Its hard for me to workout after a 12hr shift, and we are rarely getting our paid workouts anymore.
After 12hrs all I want to do is get out of my girdle and go to bed.

Well I've been taking an average of four classes a week.
The combination of physical and mental stress of a combat sport is awesome for overall fitness.
I did striking martial arts for twenty plus years. After starting Brazilian Jiu Jitsu I feel like I wasted my time.

Been suffering from a case of the "winter lazies" myself. I can't seem to get myself back into a usual routine.

<- 4 am workouts 3 days a week, right after work. The PD has keys to the local HS football gym, nice job perk.

Been maintaining my weight pretty much within the same 7-8 pound range, up and down. The flu did take 3 pounds off me overnight. Pretty amazing how much water your body can sweat off in one night.
I don't get to go to the gym since my work hours suck, but I made up for it by buying my own recumbent bicycle and Bowflex so I have my own workout station at home. I also made sure to put a TV with satellite there so I can have the time pass by easier while working out. Man's gotta do what a man's gotta do to fill out those tight tee shirts that are still trendy in L.A.
