Didn't realize they needed a warrant to investigate a crime committed on the homeowner's (victim of the crime's) property.

Well, consent, verbal or written, will work too however the safest method is always a warrant. Best method is to get both if you can.
There is no "crime scene" exception to the requirement for a warrant.

But if an officer sees something during the course of an investigation, no warrant is needed. I'm no lawyer but that's the way I understand it.
Just like if you get pulled over and the cop sees drugs under the seat, he doesn't need a warrant to search your vehicle.

Everyone is either St. Theresa or Hannibal Lechter.
This is the effect of the mass media, a symptom of the stupidity of the American public who require that good guys and bad guys be clearly labeled and 100% pure good or evil.
Poor choice to use drugs, it has bit them in the ass and will continue to do so for the next few years. Still, beats doing home invasions for fun and profit.

Search and seizure law is complicated. It would take large amounts of time to explain even the basics.
As a for instance, in reference to your first paragraph, what you said is true........sometimes.
Regarding your second paragraph, I'm not sure how someone can see something that is truly concealed under a seat to begin with so you'd have to explain that up front. Additionally, search and seizure laws regarding vehicles are very different from private residences.
Google is your friend or take some classes, it's actually pretty interesting if you are someone who likes minutia or you THINK you yearn to be a cop or attorney.

You can go off consent but it is best to have a warrant, even better to have both. It lessens the chance any evidence could be supressed.

Two of the suspects were named TaVaun, small world, who'd think 2 people with that dumb random name would ever meet in the world let alone commit a robbery together. Sad there's one less TaVaun in the world now...

The fatal home invasion in Fairborn is raising the issue of gun ownership again. Should homeowners be able to keep a gun for protection?
