We’re sorry, the IED you have dialed is not in service at this time.

OMG after disarming a IED someone tried to detonate it by calling in cell phone attached.

So glad they got to that one before it was able to be detonated. Very cool picture too, that would be a nice souvenir to keep to show the people back home.

How does the phone display the "missed call", if the service was disconnected?

The phone service wasn't disconnected. The IED was disconnected. I got the photo from Seal of honor page.

Yeah... good luck with that.

The only IED component I've ever seen smuggled out of theater was a brass EFP platter. He told Navy Customs it was a serving plate.

For small IEDs like this why not just toss the whole thing into a portable faraday cage and dump it in the ocean or something :-p

This may be a really stupid question, but don't the phones in Arabic speaking countries have Arabic displays? HH

Not necaceraly. It's an old Nokia phone. They mostly supported Latin based and left to right text so it's possible it didn't even had Arabic as a language selection.

If I were IED expert, I would really be proud of what I had done, and who I had done it to.

Congratulations to the "faster guy". Life is a race, finish well.

Something tells me when they trace that number, we're going to hear about a Drone strike.

Couldn't they just block the cell phone service in the area until the IED was rendered safe?

I would trace the call and call in an air strike.

EDIT - I can't see the picture (if there is one) of the actual phone in the OP.

They can use cell phone jammers so it can't detonate while they're disarming them. There's always the possibility there's anti-tamper switches but it's unlikely small, crude devices.

He likely just drove a MARCBOT up to it with a water/disrupting charge and separated the power source/trigger from the munition.

No. Pretty much only the Chinese smartphones have Arabic menus. They get by just fine.

It's also kind of funny that they use Arabic numerals for their wrist watches, cell phones, computers, radios, etc. but Indian numerals for writing, math, license plates, official docs.

The new Republic of Iraq should have officially scrapped Indian numerals and let them just go away.

You can trace signals, but not numbers. SIM cards are everywhere and you just pop them out of the card, stick them in the phone, and talk. Recharge as necessary via prepaid cards.

Most insurgents consider them single use items, for obvious reasons.
