if they are all you have, sooner or later, when you get real hungry, you'll eat them and at that point they are good, real good. Kind of like MREs.

With pigs feet, at least you know what part of the pig you are dealing with. With McPottedMeatViennaSausageRibs you can never be sure.

I used to eat those things when hunting with my dad all the time! Between that, beef jerky, smoked oysters and Spam...that kept us going. We would have a "tailgate buffet" in between hunts and there would be quite a spread of delicacies. Yes, the goo was disgusting, but you just give the wiener a flick and it slides right off. Great food for the BOB.

Brings back memories of fishing and hunting with my daddy. Saltines and potted meat, too!! Maybe it's just nostalgia, but I still enjoy an occasional foray into the stuff.....

Finally caved, and visited this thread.
I once bought a can, heck, it was probably just because I had seen one too many prepping videos on youtube.
Opened it, took a good look, then threw it out.

I have a few cans around for emergencies. They were good in the field too. BBQ and mustard make them almost good.

Here at the bottom of IN Vienna sausage was/is the 'meat' of choice for sawmill lunches. A can of Vienna, a packet of peanut butter crackers and a Pepsi was lunch.

Don't eat them now or potted meat either, but fomd memories of mom making "pigs in a blanket" with canned biscuits....yum!
As a spinoff, does anyme else like Braunschweiger Liverwurst?
I can't eat stuff like this every day...but there are a few items that I can't eat all the time, but cave like crazy every once on in a while, and that includes liverwurst, sardines, pimento cheese, boudin, and the classic liver and onions..

(But just between me and you: If you like trout lines or dead-stick (e.g., "bush hook") catfishing, just take ya a couple three of them little sausages and put 'em into a bowl. Then take some corn flakes and mash the sausages and corn flakes together. Add enough corn flakes till you have a ball-conformable mixture that is tight enough to stay on a hook.
I now use salmon egg hooks I buy from online as making a ball the size of the entire hook is perfect for when I fish this bait. Putting bells on the limbs or cane poles will probably keep ya busy all night if there are a lot of fish around.
Back in the day, I would form a ball of this same mixture and place it on the point and barb area of a larger sized hook. I tried to get 'em all set before sundown, and then go check 'em in the morning.

Saw them being made on a food info show last week. To my surprise, they have nothing to do with Vienna. They are made by Armour in Chicago. They are 85% chicken and 15% pork and floor sweepings. They add flavorings and some chicken broth. They are made in an endless excrusion which is rapidly cut into correct lengths and then squeezed into the little can. Acutally, it is much "healthier" than first thought. I can see why so many people enjoy them and pack them for lunch or dinner at work.
