Policing for Profit:Motel Owner Accused of Drug Aiding Wins Forfeiture Case

You don't even need to be charged with a crime (often drugs) to have your property stolen by the government. This case was in MA, where law enforcement attempts to seize man's motel based on the skimpiest of evidence.

The article is a good summary, but the actual decision is an eye opener. The things people are expected to do in our Drug War obsession probably won't even shock you any more.

There is also a report called Inequitable Justice: How Federal “Equitable Sharing” Encourages Local Police and Prosecutors to Evade State Civil Forfeiture Law for Financial Gain. It charts equitable sharing payments from the U.S. Department of Justice to state and local law enforcement doubled from about $200 million to $400 million per year.
