DHS says "Disable Java"...yes, you Mac guys too.

http://www.zdnet.com/homeland-securi...aw-7000009713/

Seems something is running wild out there and Java is the point of entry.

What do you sys admins say?

Very unusual.

If they're going to the trouble of announcing something like this, it's likely to be a big deal.

Most people shouldn't have Java available anyhow - it's a substantial vulnerability every day, and one that most users don't need open on an ongoing basis.

I'd vote yes, turn it off.

It's serious. I recommend disabling it for now. It's easy to do. You can google "Disable Java Chrome" or "Disable Java IE" and do it. However, you will find that lots of little things won't work right.

No, not Javascript. Two different programs. Java is what you want to shut off while you leave Javascript enabled.

Okay, I found it in the Add-Ons Manager and disabled it.

Yesterday or the day before I was trying to play pogo games online like I normally do. When I hit play the whole thing kicked me off and left some fatal error message on desktop.

Java is disabled on mine but I don't know how to fix it.

Apple is taking it seriously enough that the Java Plug-in is now automatically disabled via the built-in anti-malware tool.

Therefore, Mac users running Lion and Mountain Lion need take no further corrective action. Apple has handled it for you.

Yep . For all the windows users the best defense is to just open a command line and type
Del system32
Then hit enter and you should be fine.

My brother, a DBA, predicted this for java WAY back when he was a programmer. java has been a vulnerability everyday of every year since it came out back when windows gui was cutting edge.

same old same old... "fear the cloud"

ETA: Keep your firewall, antivirus, and updates on everything current. If you're on the net, someone somewhere can get inside your computer.

In other words, NEVER use it for financial business, paying bills, or keeping critical personal information.

Reactions have been pretty close to the equivalent of banning guns because to an incident. There are many more dangers a web surfer faces constantly than this. But, the name 'Java' has been tainted beyond what makes sense. Those virus and worm attacks everyone constantly watches out for are rarely written in Java.

Java is designed to avoid the issues that often show up as "blue screens of death" when programs are written in C or C++. Java applications are more reliable in that issues show up immediately (before being placed into production), independent of how the program is loaded into memory.

JavaScript is a separate, different language, the main thing in common is, 'Java' in the name. It has wrecked more havoc on the web experience by far.

I surf with Java and JavaScript disabled unless I need them to use the services of specific sites. Most would be surprised how much nicer the 'net is with JavaScript disabled.

Oracle took too long to fix Java 7, but I can easily imagine a lot of people still have Java 6 on their machines. One would have to visit an unscrupulous website with a plugin linked to Java 7 and have the plugin enabled.

Rather than panicking either upgrade to 7.11 or downgrade to 6.38 and enable the plugin when you visit specific, legit sites that almost always deploy digitally signed applets.

Thanks for the info Barry.

Since America's gestapo "homeland security" is involving itself almost daily into this thing now, me thinks it may be our shadow government's ploy in order to be able to take "protective actions" over the internet, you know, "it's for the children" kind of thing.
