Went back to UNC in 1993. I realized very quickly that the crack/gangsta thing was pretty heavy in my neighborhood.
My first week there, I decided to take my husky out for a long walk at night. I figured the dog to be a pretty good deterrent and Chapel Hill had a no-carry ordinance(now preempted); but right before leaving, I said "screw it" and stuck my G21 in my waistband(unchambered).
Shortly after commencing our walk, two guys walked up and started a conversation: nothing threatening, per se, but their tone raised suspicion.
Upon reaching my next turn I headed down through a field toward a creek and look back to see that the two guys had flagged down a car. I reached the creek(cover and concealment) and watched as four men headed my way. When they were about twenty yards away, I jacked a round(just like on tv).
"Gun", one says, and the four made tracks in the other direction.
Never had another problem with anyone.

And in almost two months, I've gotten over 1,000 posts. Lets say that's 500 posts a month. You've been here 8 years, 96 months, 96 times 500 is 48,000. So if I keep up this pace for 8 years, then I'll have double the amount of posts you do.
Who has less of a life now? Huh? Yeah, that's right, I'm the king.

A holster velcroed to the center console of the truck or fixed to the underside of the driver's seat might serve you better.

I guess the nice folks figured there would be easier targets of opportunity later on and they left quickly.

How retarded to mess with military men though! That's like the seven dwarfs picking a fight with Andre the Giant....

Back in '88, the Mrs. and I lived in a " not so good " neighborhood in Annapolis when we 1st got married. We'd live there about 3 months when we discovered the neighbor was dealing out of his apartment 2 doors down - different cars - all hours. Well, voices got loud at about 2am one morning - I called the cops. The dude in the apartment confronted me the next morning asking if I called them. I told him, "You're Damn right I did!" We got into words and the wife was watching through the screen door. Well, we started to get loud. She and I both see him reach into his pocket. I step back and MY screen door pops open! THE WIFE levels my Rem 870 w/ the pistol grip and folding stock out the font door saying, "Hold on there! Cops are on their way!" I think I had Brenneke 12 gauge slugs in it at the time. I honestly thought she was going to drill him because she had her finger on the trigger!
Well, she had already called the cops and they pullled in seconds after that. He started screaming hysterically, "She's got a shotgun! A sawed-off ****'ing shotgun!" Well, the cops already knew this dude and called him by his 1st name.
The end of the story is that, after that day, I never saw him again till 3 years later. We were summoned to a court hearing. (because of our prior involvement) He had pulled a knife on an under-cover officer in a bar and we were there to offer character testimony for the prosecution.
We moved to Pennsylvania shortly after that, never to return.
THANK YOU CINDY!!

You're so lucky! My wife knows my love of guns and that she comes 2nd (just kidding) but she respects that guns are a protection and a deterrent only if needed. She knows Charles Bronson I am not

My daughter felt she had to draw one day. While watching a movie a very large individual with short arms began chasing a security guard. My daughter jumped off the couch ran to the toybox grabbed her brothers cap gun and emptied it at the tv.
She was about three and was watching Night at the Museum.
My wife called me at work to tell me the story laughed for hours.

SO very true. There was no one there but me that evening. I was lying on my back, in bed, hands up behind my head fingers interlaced. My Goverment Model 1911 was laying on my left side on the floor. When that loud bang sounded I fliped over, snatched up the 1911, rolled back, sat upright and swept off the thumb safety all in one fluid movement. I don't remember doing any of that. Just the SNICK of that safety coming off and seeing the sight squarely in the middle of the hallway door! I fully thought someone had jerked the door open and was in the midst of leaping into my hallway when I came to the realization there was no one there, and the storm door was still closed. The sound was identical with popping that door release. BAAAANG! You always had to give it a hard rap to get it to realease. I had to fight myself to ease up on the trigger. My finger was taking up the slack and there wasn't much slack there to start with.
My heart was beating like a trip hammer. I was sucking air like the guy in the horse suit from the pizza commercial. I swept the safety back on and sank back on the pillow.
The first time I ever suspected someone in the house, it sounded like someone was walking around in the front of my mobile home. I thought it was my wife up and I reached beside me to find her sleeping. WHAT WAS THAT WALKING SOUND? Then to my terror, the footsteps came closer and closer. Someone is coming down my hall and I have a sleeping woman to protect with nothing but my bare hands! (No gun at that time) Turns out it was my neighbor walking his dog in the dirt lane beside my home. He was returning back from an early morning walk, his inital footfalls were the ones that first awakened me. His returning along the same lane was what sounded like steps in my hallway. Talk about your icy sweats.....The terror was unimaginable for those few minutes.
Shortly after, I purchased a pistol. I have slept with one from that day forward. I never want to feel that helpless ever again!
