It was 8% pay cut the first year, across the board (all employees, management as well) with gradual pay increases of 1-3% each year thereafter for the 5 year contract. (Specifically: -8% year one. -Year two, three and four, pay will go up 3%...resulting in a net of still being -5%. Year five, pay will increase 1%, to a net pay of -4% below what it was at the start of the contract.
The Bakers Union spun this to be -8% plus -5% plus -5% plus -5% plus -4% = -27% pay cut. If you actually do the math, it's less than a 6% pay cut over the five year contract.)

The union was trying to spin the numbers by including the increase in healthcare premiums and reduction in pension contribution and even the rate of inflation into one big number, while not including any give backs by the company.

The kicker is, the Teamsters Union actually said "This sucks, but it sucks for everyone. So we're okay with it if the deal will save the company." The other smaller union (Bakers and Grain Mill Operators) thought they could do better and walked out...taking the entire company down with them. All the while, the Teamsters were telling the Bakers' union "Dude, this is real. We've seen the financial records. It's going to fold. You have to stop."
Bakers' union told the Teamsters to eff off, we're handling this like real men.

Yep...when reading the article, it was quit evident the union was trying to play up the numbers as much as possible to generate as much emotion against the company as they could.

Not knowing what the Teamsters said, if what you said is right (which I don't doubt), demonstrates the greed of the local union wanting to be the big dog. Seems like the Teamsters was using some common sense...unlike the other.

As a member of a union that only causes the managers to be able to say really stupid **** prefaced by "in a union environment" I'm getting a kick out of this thread.

Honestly I don't even know why I signed up for it, maybe because everyone else in my hire group did. From what I hear they have to "protect" you even if you don't pay the dues. I think I could hold on to that $28 a month and put it under my mattress and be better protected.

Especially considering that I do my damn job, do it well, and have seen many long time coworkers walked out the door over the past few months of the most trivial BS you could imagine. I'm sure they've been paying their dues for 5 years or more.

It is difficult to do this -

Once a company has a union they can't just fire them and hire new people.

You can hire temps - but in reality - running a business with people that have not had the proper training is really hard.

I worked at a company where the union went out of strike - in this case they considered hiring temps - the key is how many "regular" employees will cross the picket line and want to work -

If enough of the regular employees will show up - you can do it with temps. If only a few will cross you don't have much chance of making it work.

In my case - the strike lasted months - was really nasty - they ended up getting it resolved - only to go back on strike again a year later - the company ended up closing - everyone lost.

By then I was gone - (this was back in 1980) but knew / was friends with several people that were making $40K + full benefits package that lost their jobs - and ended up finally getting jobs that paid less than 1/2 with no benefits.

I assume Texas is a right-to-work state.

As Z71bill said it will be hard to replace the experienced workforce. However, they may not have to. I would bet that, once the new owners re-open the place (assuming they do) then there will be plenty of people willing to cross - especially if they wait a few months. It depends on the local unemployment situation really.

Then, make sure it is known (but not published) that if the union returns, the plant will be moved.
