How many VFW members here?
I have been a life member since my first deployment started in 2008.
$420 for Life Membership is the way to go IMO.

I looked into the VFW when I got out of the Navy in 1975. I was told I was ineligible because I couldn't prove I was ever in a war zone. I was in the submarine service, and where the boats went and what they did was classified (and still is), so there was no way I could prove something like that. Interestingly, years later the VFW changed its rules and I was then eligible to join. Never did.

I tried to join when I got back from Vietnam in 1967. I was very rudely rejected and told "We don't want your kind."

Both the VFW and the Legion use some bad databases for their mailings. I served in the US Army but not during the time periods/places that qualify for membership yet I keep getting the mailings. I think I might apply the Groucho Marx rule, anyway.

I had a similar experience back in the ,70s and therefore discarded the VFW until '04 when they actively sought my participation by paying for my life membership. I even served as Post Chaplain and as a member of the Color Guard. I figure, let bygones be bygones.

Sounds like some old boys wanted to keep it an old boys club. I would have got in their face and asked "and what kind would that be" and I would have demanded an answer.
I would have also have written a letter to the national HQ. That post would have alot of explaining to do.

VFW Life Member for almost 20 years. Usually to busy to go much, but a membership that does not expire is useful for buying CMP rifles every few years.
