Crazy Gun Show Experience

I went into a tri-state gun & knife show in Mississippi about 9:20 this morning and had not been there 5 minutes when a rifle went off. Everyone thought it was in the lobby and ran that way to see what had happened. However, a vendor with a table just inside the front door had a 22-250 rifle tied off on their table and someone reached down to check it out, touched the trigger, and the gun went off!!!

The bullet actually traveled through two walls and fragments hit a 4-year-old girl in the upper arm/shoulder area and a man in the thigh. The little girl was ok but taken to the hospital to get checked out. The man had blood on his jeans but said he was ok and just got medical attention from the paramedics that had arrived.

The police arrived and shut the doors and let no one in until they completed their investigation. There was a huge group of several hundred people waiting to get in when I left.

On another note, I had went in to try to find either a tactical rifle case for my AR-15 or a tactical sling. Nothing of that nature at the show whatsoever - mostly knives, used guns, and retailed-priced ammo. So basically, except for the drama, it was a waste of $6.

Crazy! I would expect that there are strict rules about guns being unloaded. I'm guessing the dealer is going to be in some trouble.

I went to the last Dallas show and I was the 15th person in the door Saturday. The water jug at the safety desk was empty when I went in and when I left around 1pm it was 1/4 full. I estimate there was 100+ rounds in it. It really scares me people can be so careless. I case my guns I am selling and clear them before handing them to someone but I can't count how many times someone was sighting down a barrel and had it pointed at someone.

This one of the reasons why I'm worried about going to gun shows. At least everybody is okay and there weren't any serious injuries. Really hope that vendor gets in trouble for keeping ammo in his firearms at the show, and the guy gets in trouble for going anywhere near that trigger.

My daughter has been to dozens of shows. As a matter of fact, we just got home from the KCR Machine Gun shoot this afternoon. It is a great father daughter moment for the two of us. She has been going to shows since she was walking.

Maybe you also think that parents should keep all of their guns hidden in the back of the closet and pretend that they don't have any, that way when their ten year old child is digging to find what gifts he is getting for some holiday, he can shoot his sibling when he doesn't know what the hell to do with the gun?

My daughter and my wife for that matter are well versed in gun safety and are well aware that there are guns in the house. My daughter goes shooting with me quite often.

Maybe if more parents took their kids out and spent time with them pursuing some of the things that make this country great we would have less professional welfare liberals in the voting booths giving our freedom away for a loaf of bread.

I've been going to gun shows in the Houston TX area since the early 80's and have never been at one when a firearm went off. Of the shows I've heard of that have had discharges it is always a dealer gun.

Hopefully they each heal quickly. At a show here a while back a guy dropped a round and it went off. A few tense high pucker factor moments until everyone realized what happened.

$6 bucks? It's usually $10-$12 bucks here in Atlanta area for Nazi paraphenalia, beef jerky, OLD ammo, and zombie stuff...if you're lucky you might glimpse a gun or two but it's usually Hi Points and Sigmas!

Same here. In fact I use to go to the monthly ones in Spring back in the early to mid 1990s

I'm with you. I get wanting to expose kids to shooting/guns at an early age. But, taking them to an event that typically seems to be populated by every mouth-breathing, inbred moron in 3 states isn't a part of my plan for my kids. Too much of what happened here for me to take my kids.

If I go and get shot by bubba, that's my problem, but I'm not going to put my child at risk. I don't take them to ranges either. If they shoot, it's on my land. Occasionally, they might make it into a gun store. When one of them asks me to take them, it might be different. But since they have no interest in being there for the time being(they're still pretty young) I see no reason to expose them to the sea of morons at my local shows.

I was at a Tulsa show a few years ago when someone discharged a firearm he had picked up off a dealer's table. I've been to gun shows for years and never experienced anything like that, pretty sobering experience. The show officials promptly surrounded his tables, helped him pack up his merchandise and escorted him out the door.

Exactly, right on

Now, my son and daughter have been exposed to firearms their whole life, never hidden , but certainly not just laying around either. The both of them went to my gun club range, early morning when we had the place all to ourselves, at age 10-12. I've taken my son to a gun show once at age 14. They both hold concealed carry permits since turning 21, both own Glocks.

I'm all for teaching children respect, and getting them into the shooting sports.

I didn't mean to offend anyone with my comment, just my opinion.

On a side note, I haven't been to a gun show in 10 yrs or more, nothing but junk vendors, overpriced guns & ammo, and wading my way through rude and ignorant people that clog up the isle BS'ing

I actually went to my first show ever today as they are rare around here. Nothing great but an ok way to kill a few hours. Found some 5.45, garand approved ammo, & a few 7 round speed loaders for my 686 plus.

Years ago there was a show in the the next town to my west, across the state line that was kind of small. You could see some unusual stuff, old guns, not the usual tables of black rifles and handguns. One time my wife and I were in town shopping and saw the sign so I stopped in. There had been an AD about twenty minutes before we got there, went through the roof. Weird thing is I knew the guy responsible, he used to work in where I do and I know that he had an AD before and blown up his knee. Can't fix stupid. Never went to that show after that and I think the organizer finally folded his tent.
