Life member here, became one after Hiillary Clinton shot her mouth off about gin control when Slick Willie was POTUS. I'll always be a member, especially after they pin back the ears of the NOPD after Katrina. Remember; "turn in your guns because we say so!!!"

I am a Life Member of the NRA, and an instructor for many of their disciplines, across different categories. I teach/hold workshops at least 10x a year (on average, over the past 10 years), sometimes for less than break even. I am passionate about our 2nd Amendment rights, the sport of shooting, and gun ownership (they are not always mutually inclusive, or the same).
From a legislative/lobbying/fund-raising perspective, the NRA has the best engine for applying pressure where it is needed.
From a perspective of court cases in the judicial arena, they cannot hold a candle to the sunlight of the SAF.
If you want to chip away at gun restrictions in the courtroom SUPPORT THE SAF.
If you want to make your voice heard in Washington DC at both congressional levels, SUPPORT THE NRA-ILA and the NRA.
If you want to help bring about changes to gun laws in your state JOIN A LOCAL GUN-RIGHTS organization, and more important, TEACH YOUR KIDS AND YOUR NEPHEWS/NEICES/GRAND-OFFSPRING to shoot, and foster a love of shooting in them.
Every thing else is just fluff.
If Amazon.com was running the NRA (or Congress, or IBM, etc), just imagine how efficient they would be. MOST naturally occuring organisms have a finite life - there is a reason for that. Human cells cannibalize older, bruised cells, and at some point all human cells simply quit. It is in OUR best interest to have a new, leaner organization rise from the ashes of what exists today, to defend and support our gun rights.
Unfortunately, so many people (many here) are afraid of real non-Obama change, it most likely won't ever happen.

When the left wing talks about "the powerful gun lobby" blocking "an important piece of gun legislation", they are talking about the NRA and NRA/ILA.
Shoot your .22's a little more and your 9mm/.45/etc a little less and pony up the cash and join.

I am 64 years old and joined the NRA for three years about ten years ago. I did not even own a gun at the time. If available I was not aware of the ability to turn off the flow of offers. I will rejoin and I thank those who let me know of that option. I am being printed and photographed Monday for my FL ccw.

The NRA is probably the most powerful and effective lobbying group of all time. There are other groups that also do good work (e.g., the SAF), but the NRA is the big dog. Every gun owner should join.

That is correct. Nevertheless, I recommend that the person complaining watch the DVD first. It is Rob Pincus teaching his combat focus method. Interesting and informative. Then, just trash the DVD or send it back in the prepaid mailer.

One thing I love about the NRA - today I received the latest issue of American Rifleman. The cover said "Defend Freedom. DEFEAT OBAMA". No wishy-washy BS about it. I like that. I hope it signifies a trend.
The best thing about the NRA, and I'm a member of several gun-rights organizations, is that the NRA strikes fear in the hearts of anti-gunners more than any other. That alone makes them worth joining.

The more members the NRA has the greater their influence and the more selective they can be with who they put their support behind. Also the SAF is an excellent group. I support them as well in additional to several local group.
There is something like 80 million gun owners in the US but the NRA only has something on the order of 4.3 million members.. If only half the gun owners in the US were a members of the NRA, we would have very very little to worry about from politicians infringing on our right of self defense.
Just imagine if every gun owner in the US was an NRA and SAF member..
There are two types of gun owners, those who are riding in the wagon and those who are pulling it. If you are not a member of at least one of the great groups that support our rights then you are just free loading on the work of others.

Do you happen to know why you no longer get bright orange tags on the outside of your luggage when you fly with a firearm? Did you ever wonder who lobbied for there to be a sunset in the Assault Weapon Ban instead of it being permanent from the get-go? Have you considered why there is no permanent 5 day waiting period on all firearm purchases and the instant check became the standard instead?
Yeah, other places (SAF) tend to initiate a lot of the lawsuits but for the lobbying, it's the NRA above and beyond anyone.
Oh yeah, a lot of people got and get down on the NRA for being a Johnny come lately to the McDonald case and some even think the NRA horned in and came close to blowing the case entirely after the SAF started it. One day really read the McDonald findings, all of them, and look at who brought up what arguments (2d amendment, 14th amendment, etc) and what the finding for the defendant actually hinged on. Just to put it out there for consideration, it was the NRA's argument that the majority ruled on, NOT any one else's.
So, yeah, they do stuff. The SAF is excellent for lawsuits and I'll give them money every day of the week but the NRA is the one actually lobbying in the congress as well as the state houses, where the SAF is not. Two organizations that do different things.

I do not deny that the NRA can do some glory-grabbing, but they are not worthless. The lobbying force of the NRA is solid.

Never gotten a phone call from them. Weird. But then again I did call them and ask to get taken off the fund raising lists.
