Pictures made it look like this:
I actually got to see this:
All the pics are close telephoto shots making the heads look huge and impressive. But they're only medium sized, and they were at the time building the new visitor center, so you couldn't get much closer than the parking lot. Huge letdown. Not that what's there isn't cool in its own teeny way, but my expectations had been poorly set.
By contrast, the nearby Crazy Horse monument is on a truly epic scale.

Huge +1. Definitely a let down. In my opinion not worth the trip to see it. Much better in photos. But the view of the black hills from the site is incredible.

When we went we were able to get pretty close so it was ok.
You are absolutely correct on Crazy Horse! It is amazing! I just hope I live long enough to see it completed.
