17L or 17 RTF2 for daughter's graduation?

My daughter asked for a 17L for a college graduation present this Spring, specifically MY 17L (with Warren/Sevigny Comp sights). I found a new 17RTF2 (with gills) that I think would be a better first gun as she can use it for home defense in addition to range fun.

Should I get ready for her to be upset now, or am I good with the 17 RTF2?

A lot of people for some reason think the RTF2 texture is too abrasive. Personally I think it's a great weapon and is my texture of choice.

You know her best, but I would think if raised right, she would appreciate either.

(but I know the feeling of having my heart set on something and then not getting it)

Talk to her. See what she wants and why.

Communication is key.

If she asked for the 17L, I'd get that for her. She'll love it.

Or maybe consider the 34? The RTF2 grips she might not like at all because of the texture.

You should get the G17 RTF for her and then get yourself the G17L.......?????? I like the sound of that.

While I love the RTF2 texture (I've recently sold a P30L and HK45 and replaced them with a RTF2 17 and 21SF) both my girls find the texture unpleasantly abrasive (although they've not shot either yet). Has your daughter tried one? If not, I think she'd like the 17L best. RTF2s do seem to be maybe a bit of an acquired taste. If she's anything like me once you get your heart set on a certain gun anything else is a little bit of a letdown. Besides, there are far worse home defense guns than a 17L. And, maybe your 17L has a special connection for her.

The 17L is a helluva gun and can be used for SD / HD and range fun. If she decides to shoot comp. she'll have a leg up and the L will probably hold its value a little better. See if you can find a second one. I'd have trouble giving one up as well - even to family.

Communication is key, as mentioned above.

I noticed you mentioned she wants your 17L. Why yours vs. a new one? I'd ask myself that... and it could be an answer as cute as, "because it was yours Dad". Which would melt my heart if my daughter said that, and I would be shopping for a new 17L for myself.

If she likes the feel and look, yes I said look (I think GLOCKs are combat sexy), I would take her to the LGS for some introductions to other GLOCK options. JMHO

give her your 17L and get you another one. The rtf may be to abrasive for her as i have one and think after a few rounds its gets a bit on my nerves.

Ok, you guys have been great. I'm going to give her my 17L if she wants it for sentimental reasons. If she wants a new one, subject to availability, she'll get it.
